Ophelia, William Henry Goss Ltd, circa 1885, the young girl seated on a tree stump encrusted with leaves flanked by bulrushes, on a circular base, titled to the front, impressed "W H Goss", 51cm high In The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, pg.244 it is noted that Jewitt, a friend of W H Goss, noted in 1883; "In Parian, for which Mr Goss ranks deservedly high, busts, statuary, vases, tazzas, scent-jars, bread platters and many other ornamental goods are made ... portrait busts ... rank far above the average, and are, indeed, perfect reproductions of the living originals".
The Riverside, after Owen Hale, Copeland, circa 1885, as an almost nude young girl dipping her toes in a stream by a tree stump, impressed "Copeland", 46cm high See illustration A similar figure is illustrated in a page from a Copeland trade catalogue of the 1880's. See The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.485, pg.138. The figure is also illustrated in fig.501, where is it described as being published in 1881. There is a rather similar companion figure to this (illustrated in Copeland (Robert) Parian, Copeland's Statuary Porcelain, Antique Collectors Club, p.172, S142a. Owen Hale. Sculptor and watercolour painter working in London in the last quarter of the 19th century. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, exhibiting his works regularly at the RA and elsewhere. His sculptural works were chiefly portrait busts in terracotta, shown at the RA from 1884 onwards.
Flower Girl, after Aime Chesneau, for The Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union, Copeland, published 1874, the downward gazing beauty wearing diaphanous dress and holding a posy in her left hand, on a rocky base, impressed "Copeland M74, A Chesneau Sc Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union", 42.5cm high See illustration A similar figure is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.536, pg.161. This figure is apparently also called French Flower Girl. Aime Chesneau: he exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution from 1863-1875. He was a specialist in bronze portrait busts, roundels and reliefs. He was born in Paris, and studied under Carrier-Belleuse, and Jules Salmson. See Copeland (Robert) Parian, Copeland's Statuary Porcelain, Antique Collectors Club, p.85, where this work is attributed to Amie Chesneau and goes by the name "First Bath of the Season" statuette.
The Indian Girl, and The Negress, after Charles Cumberworth, Copeland, circa 1855, the Indian girl holds a bowl of seashells and a frog-form jug, the negress carries a water jar, on circular bases, the Indian girl impressed "F97", the nubian impressed "Copeland", 44cm by 45cm high respectively See illustration Similar figures are illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.535, pg.160, where they are described as "This pair of companion figures were shown by Copeland at The Great Exhibition 1851 and illustrated in The Art Journal Exhibition Supplement". In Copeland (Robert) Parian, Copeland's Statuary Porcelain, Antique Collectors Club, p.161, it is mentioned that a price at the 1851 Great Exhibition for the Indian Girl was 2 1/2 guineas, ie £2.12.6 (in the price list for 1851 she is listed as Negress). The prices for this figure are substantially lower than those for her companion, despite the similarities of size and sculpture. Issued in both large and small sizes, the large being approx 53.34cm. Charles Cumberworth (1811-1852) was born in Verdun and trained under Pradier at the Ecole des Beaux Arts from the age of 18. Exhibited his work at the Salon between 1833-1843. His specialised in portrait busts of contemporary celebrities, including members of the Orleanist Royal Family, also subjects from romantic literature.

The work is sold together with the original sale invoice from Neales of Nottingham, sold on the 24th Feb 2000.

Kathleen M. Pearson (1898-1961), "Newtown Farm near Brecon", signed and dated 1949, artist's label inscribed on verso, oil on canvas, 49.5 x 59.5cm.; 19.5 x 23.5in, together with eight signed Christmas cards sent from Kathleen Pearson and incorporating photographic reproduction of other works by the artist (9). * Portrait and equestrian painter in oil, born in Knutsford, Cheshire. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1920, then at the Royal Academy Schools, 1921 - 6. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of Women Artists, Cooling Galleries and elsewhere. Her work is held by Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth and Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery.
Wilhelm Viktor Krausz (Hungarian, 1878-1959), "Meine Mutter" - three quarter length portrait of a seated lady wearing a black dress, signed, inscribed on verso, oil on canvas, 98 x 77cm.; 38.5 x 30.25in. * Lived mainly in Vienna. He took part in the Berlin Exhibition in 1900 and in the Paris Exposition Universelle of the same year where he obtained an honourable mention.
A Chinese polychrome box and cover of lobed circular form, produced for the Spanish market, the cover enamelled with a portrait of King Charles IV of Spain, inscribed Carolus III Dei Gratia 1808, the base with the Spanish Royal Arms and inscribed Hispan Et Ind Rex, Jaiqing period, 6cm. diameter. * The decoration has been directly copied from a Mexico, Spanish Colonial Eight Real coin, struck under King Charles III of Spain (1716-1788). Part of the inscription includes details of the mint, the denomination and the assayers initials. Charles IV (1748-1819) abdicated on March 19th 1808.

Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas (1848-1943). Portrait study of a huntswoman seated side saddle, the hunt in progress beyond, signed and dated H. F. Lucas Lucas 96 bottom right, inscribed on the reverse Harlequin Painted by H. F. Lucas Lucas, Rugby Dec.1896, oilon canvas. 49.5 x 59.5cm. * H. F. Lucas Lucas was born near Louth in Lincolnshire and settled in Rugby in 1878. In his 95 years he covered all forms of equestrian sport including polo, racing and hunting. He executed many pictures of The Pytchley Hunt in Northamptonshire and undertook numerous commissions.

Thomas J Jones ARCA (fl. 1901-1935), Portrait of a nobleman, Watercolour Thomas J Jones specialised in figurative subjects and landscapes. He studied at the Royal College of Art and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1901. He was born in Bideford, Devon and was Principal of the Tunbridge Wells School of Arts and Crafts.
