A Flag Fan or Fixed Hand Screen with a Turned Bone Handle, the flag section made from plaited straw, a star design to the centre. Overall length 15.75 inches or 40 cm, the width of the flag section 6.5 inches or 16.5cm A similar fan was sold at Christie's SK on 25th February 1997, lot 50. That fan was described as ivory, Italian, Venice or Florence, 16th century. Hammer price £8,000.00. Mention was made in the CSK catalogue that there is a similar fan in the Herbert Horne Collection in Florence, inv. Number 763, and a portrait by Titian, in the DSK in Dresden shows a lady holding a hand screen. Subsequently, debate continues as to the age of such fans and their country of origin.Good.
Circa 1880, A French Fan, with green/pink mother-of-pearl sticks, silvered and gilded, the double velum leaf painted with a maiden reclining on a tree branch being seduced by a near naked youth, large and colourful wings sprouting from his shoulders. The tree is alive with apple blossoms and a large dragonfly approaches from the right. The verso is painted with a spray of cornflowers and a large initial M. Signed by the artist, Albert Maignan dated 1880, and dedicated to his wife. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm; Together with a maroon coloured leather fan box with ruby silk lining embossed A.Rodien 48 rue Cambon in gold inside the lid. An old document giving details of the artist's career is contained inside Albert Pierre René Maignan (1845 to 1908) was a renowned French history painter and illustrator. He exhibited in The Salon from 1867 and his paintings can be found in museums in Amiens, Le Mans, Reims, Lille, Montreal, Luxembourg and Melbourne. He was awarded the Legion d'honneur in 1895. In 1878 he married Etiennette Larivière, a portrait painter, daughter of the artist Charles-Philippe l LarivièreFan 1 - Good, clean and shiny pearl, no damage noted. The leaf is clean and crisp..
A Late 18th Century Italian Ivory Fan, the monture very finely pierced and carved, with tortoiseshell thumb guards and portrait plaques carved on the upper guards. The double velum leaf is painted with a central cartouche depicting Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Showing her Children as her only Ornaments. On the right, a young woman holding a necklace, Cornelia to the left, indicating her two sons, with a female servant approaching. The reserves and borders painted with delicate classical designs. The verso is plain pale blue. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm. Together with a modern card fan box. After Benjamin West (1738 to 1820), an American Neoclassical Artist, who became the second President of the Royal AcademyThe recto is clean, the verso slightly soiled. One sliver of the gorge carving missing, to the left.
A French Revolutionary Period Printed Fan, 1793, mounted on bone, the double paper leaf printed with the Testament of King Louis XVI, a central stipple engraved medallion containing eight portrait busts of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Mme. Premiere, La Comtesse de Provence, La Comtesse d'Artois, Le Comte d'Artois, Le Compte de Provence, and Le Dauphin. The verso is plain. King Louis XVI was born on August 23rd 1754 and died on the 21st of January 1793. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm Exhibited at Fan Maker's Hall, 4th to 5th December 1980 catalogue # 30Lacks one gorge stick and rib. At this point the leaf has been repaired from behind. There are other areas of weakness/splitting, note the first inch in from the left to the bottom border of the leaf.
Circa 1860's, A Small Painted Ivory Brisé Fan, bearing a portrait of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, who met with the guillotine in 1793. The recto, with a dark cream background, is decorated in shades of brown and ginger, bordering the portrait and forming decorative swags. The verso is painted with garlands and a vase of flowers. Diamante at the rivet. Signed E Kees to the lower guard. Twenty-six inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 6.5 inches or 16.5cmGood. The silk ribbon is thin in places but currently holding.
A Late 19th Century Point De Gaze Needle Lace Fan Mounted on Ivory, the sticks gilded, the guards elaborately carved with cupids, flower baskets, a bird and the initials ''LB''. The Belgian lace surrounds a central cream gauze panel painted with a portrait of Emile Blavet, signed beneath ''th Ballervy''? The verso is unadorned. The needle lace is of fine quality with varied and intricate fillings. A large elaborate cream silk tassel incorporating metal threads is attached. guard length 14 inches or 34.5cm. Together with a fine and substantial cream silk fan box bearing the initials ''LB on the lid exterior, and Geslin fan label within. The interior of the box is padded and quilted Provenance: Collection of Mrs Blavet, featuring a portrait of her husband. Emile Blavet was a French writer and journalist, with several novels to his credit. He contributed to many French newspapers, the Figaro perhaps being the most well-known, and was Editor in Chief at others. He married his second wife, Lucie Dupuis, a soprano, on July 4th 1888, in Paris. This may well have been her betrothal fanThe monture is sound, the gauze is strong. Some brown spotting on the lace and the gauze but not extensive. No retailer label in the box.
The Triumph of Venus: A Circa 1880 Fan, with double velum leaf, mounted on pierced and gilded, slightly green/ pink mother-of-pearl sticks, the recto painted with a vibrant depiction of Venus with a nereid drawing her chariot into the shore, her attendant and Cupid accompanied by other cherubs playing music and carrying a flower garland. Signed A. Topart. The verso is plain save for light borders painted in gold, and signed Duvelleroy to the bottom left edge of the leaf. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm Possibly Antonin Pierre Topart (b. Paris 1833) who was a portrait and history painter in oils and enamels. He exhibited at The Salon from 1864 to 1882. His daughter Louise is known to have exhibited fans.The monture is clean, bright, shiny and strong. Slight rubbing to the folds but the recto retains attractive colour.
