A portrait in oils on canvas of an elderly, bearded scholar against a dark background, signed 'Bernstein' in lower left corner; mounted on a traditional wood stretcher and held in a gilt frame. 1.50kg, 64 x 53cm overall (25 x 21"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired Essex 2015. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lyell, Sir Charles, A Manual of Elementary Geology, London, 4th revised edition, illustrated throughout (500 woodcuts); original embossed cloth binding with inked ownership inscription to front endpaper; accompanied by a framed engraved portrait of Lyell. 2.0 kg total, book 23 x 15cm, portrait frame 44 x 38cm (9 x 6, 17 1/4 x 15"). Ex libris Stuart Baldwin, Essex, UK. A classic and standard text. [2, No Reserve] Good condition; book spine torn with small loss, corners bumped.

Group comprising: two gilt bronze spoons with twisted handles formed from the outer edges of bronze halfpennies showing the inscriptions and surmounted by a cut out portrait bust taken from farthings; each bowl formed from a farthing of Victoria and Edward VII respectively. See S. 3964 and 3992 for coins. 10.79 grams total, 78 - 85mm (3 - 3 1/4"). [2, No Reserve] Fine condition.
Circle of Jean Honore Fragonard 1732-1799 French. Oil on Panel. “Portrait of a Lady”. Measures 27cm x 29cm. Condition Report – Full provenance details on the reverse. The panel has bowed over time and is extremely thick. The paint surface is very good with just some minor re-touching by the hand when examined under UV. Fine original gilt frame with minor loses.
Phoebus Levin 1836-1908 German. Oil on canvas. “Portrait of a Girl and Dog”. Signed Lower Right. Measures 60cm x 77cm. Condition Report – Has been relined and cleaned. There is a small area of bitumisation lower left where the darker paint has affected by heat. Under UV there is minor scattered re-touching to the surface of the painting. Contemporary gilt frame.
Follower of Rembrandt 1606-1669. Oil on canvas. “Portrait of a Man in Fur Coat”. Measures 64cm x 77cm. Condition Report – Has been relined and cleaned and is on a replacement stretcher. The paint and canvas are extremely stable and in very good condition. The areas of impasto have been maintained. Some areas of retouching to the background but the face appears untouched under UV examination. Black replacement frame with name plaque.
