By or After Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Portrait of Sir Patrick Blake, full length, oil on canvas, re-lined, 237cm x 147cm. Provenance: The Great House Collection, Kegworth. Auctioneer's Notes: This painting is listed as no.188a in the Reynolds catalogue raisonné by David Mannings (Yale, 2000). With much of Reynolds' oeuvre it can be difficult to draw a line between autograph and studio works. Mannings denotes the portrait a 'copy (?)' of the Fisher Art Gallery, LA, version. The question mark is the most telling punctuation in that academics have expressed doubts about whether the Fisher picture is indeed the original. There is no published estimate as it will be for the buyer to decide whether it is indeed an autograph or studio work. The lot is to be sold WITHOUT RESERVE.
