LAWRENCE D.H.: (1885-1930) English Author. An original pencil drawing, apparently a self portrait in the hand of Lawrence, depicting the bearded writer in a semi-profile head and shoulders pose. The drawing is executed in bold pencil on the verso of a sheet of 4to paper bearing a colour printed letterhead to the recto and address at Taos, New Mexico. Accompanied by a T.L.S. by David Nash of Sotheby`s, one page, 4to, New York, 19th May 1964, to Karl Haffenreffer, explaining that the book department of the London office of Sotheby`s have provided him with the information requested concerning the D. H. Lawrence self portrait, commenting `It appears that on May 27th. 1963 we sold a pencil self portrait which we attributed to D. H. Lawrence. It was a part of lot 268 in this sale, and was described as follows:…included in the lot is a pencil self-portrait by Lawrence, and two photographs, three of the letters are published in the Collected Letters…..This description seems to agree with the one that was offered to you.` Some heavy discoloration to the page, evidently caused by previous framing, and some light age wear to both the sketch and letter, again caused by previous framing. G, 2 Lawrence lived at Taos, New Mexico from 1924-26 at the Kiowa Ranch, now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch. He acquired the property in exchange for the manuscript of Sons and Lovers.
STOWE HARRIET BEECHER: (1811-1896) American Abolitionist and Author of Uncle Tom`s Cabin (1852). A.Q.S., H B Stowe, penned on a slip of paper, n.p., 2nd March 1889. Stowe pens a brief religious quotation from Psalm 37:3, `Trust in the Lord and do good`. Neatly mounted beneath a magazine portrait of Stowe to an 8vo page removed from an album. WUNDERLICH FRITZ: (1930-1966) German Tenor. Vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph, a close-up portrait of the smiling singer. Signed in blue fountain pen ink, largely across a clear area of the image, and with a German greeting in his hand. Autographs of Wunderlich are rare following his tragically early death at the age of 36. VG

[DILLINGER JOHN]: (1903-1934) American Bank Robber. An original printed folio Wanted poster issued by J. Edgar Hoover and the United States Department of Justice, Washington D.C., 23rd June 1934. The poster features a portrait of Dillinger and offers a reward of $10,000 for his capture or $5,000 for information leading to his arrest. A description of the criminal is provided including details of his scars. Some overall staining and age wear and a few small tears at the edges. FR
BEECHEY FREDERICK WILLIAM: (1796-1856) English Naval officer and Geographer. A.L.S., F W Beechey, three pages, 4to, 10th May (1818?), to his father, Sir William Beechey (1753-1839, English Portrait Painter). Beechey announces that they will set sail tomorrow morning and explains that, while he will write at every opportunity, these may be few `for the Greenland ships do not keep on the western side of the Bay`. He further adds `We are extremely comfortable and depart in high spirits with the prospect of passing one night, before our return, within the Arctic Circle` and continues to send his affection and love to his father, mother and all the girls. With integral address leaf (small area of paper loss caused by removal of seal). Some light age wear, about VG In 1818 Beechey served under John Franklin in David Buchan`s Arctic expedition, of which he later published a narrative.
PEEL ROBERT: (1788-1850) British Prime Minister 1834-35, 1841-46. A.L.S., Sir Robert Peel, in the third person, one page, 4to, Whitehall, 24th February n.y. to [Benjamin] Haydon (1786-1846) English Painter. Peel states that he is `gratified by hearing that Mr. Haydon was pleased by the situation assigned to the Picture of Napoleon, and by his visit to Drayton Manor.` He further comments on a portrait of Lady Peel by Lawrence, explaining that he `will take care that the risk of injury to the picture` is avoided. With blank integral leaf. Together with an A.L.S., Robert Peel, one page, 4to, Stanhope Street, 2nd November n.y. (1824), to `My dear Floyd` (Sir Henry Floyd). Peel states that he is sure it will satisfy his correspondent and Lady Floyd `to hear that Julia has been this day safely brought to bed` continuing `She has a fine little boy, and all is going on favourably.` With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper, hand addressed and signed by Peel and bearing the remnants of the red wax seal. G to VG, 2 Julia Peel (d.1893) Daughter of Robert Peel and wife of George Child Villiers, 6th Earl of Jersey (1808-1859). They had three children.
THATCHER MARGARET: (1925- ) British Prime Minister 1979-90. Signed printed slim 8vo folding election campaign leaflet issued for the General Election, 11th June 1987. Signed by Thatcher with her name alone in blue ink to a clear area of her portrait on the cover. Together with a signed colour 6.5 x 6 reproduction photograph of Thatcher in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in silver ink with her name alone to a clear area at the base of the image. The signature is a little scratchy in places. Neatly laid down. VG to EX Margaret Thatcher held her seat of Finchley in the 1987 General Election, winning with a majority of 8,913 over Labour.
NIXON RICHARD: (1913-1994) American President 1969-74. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of Nixon standing outdoors in a half length pose. Signed in dark ink to the lower photographer`s mount beneath a calligraphic inscription to John Larimer. Together with Pat Nixon (1912-1993) First Lady of the United States 1969-74. Signed and inscribed colour 8 x 10 photograph of the First Lady in a smiling head and shoulders pose. Signed in black ink to the lower white border and inscribed to John Larimer. Both images are slightly faded. Some very light age wear and small nicks to the extreme edges of Richard Nixon`s photograph. G, 2 John Larimer served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and apparently later became Richard Nixon`s bodyguard. Included in the lot is a hardback edition of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, bearing Larimer`s ownership signature, and featuring his portrait alongside others of the First Battalion, Platoon 114.
BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. Signed colour postcard, featuring a circular portrait of Baden-Powell in a head and shoulders pose, in uniform, surrounded by an attractive colour design of various British flags and standards. Signed (`R S S Baden Powell`) in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area and dated 18th December 1900 in his hand. Some very light age wear, otherwise VG
PEGOUD ADOLPHE: (1889-1915) French Pioneer Aviator, the first fighter ace. Pegoud was also the first pilot to make a parachute jump from an aeroplane. Vintage signed postcard photograph, an interesting and historic image showing Pegoud`s aircraft at the Bleriot Aerodrome. A large group of men, women and some children can be seen approaching the aircraft. A printed caption, in French, states that Pegoud`s aircraft had just landed following his loop flight. With a small circular inset portrait of the aviator. Signed (`A. Pegoud`) in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the image. Autographs of Pegoud are rare in any form following his tragic death at the age of 26 when he was shot down. VG Pegoud, in his capacity as a Bleriot test pilot, flew a loop in his Bleriot model XI monoplane on 21st September 1913. He believed it to be the first such flight, although a Russian pilot, Pyotr Nesterov, had flown one just 12 days earlier.
ROE ALLIOTT VERDON: (1877-1958) English Pioneer Pilot and Aircraft Manufacturer. Vintage signed postcard photograph depicting Roe in flight in a triplane. With a small oval inset portrait of the aviator. Signed (`A. V. Roe`) in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area of the image. Roe has penned a brief note to the verso, `This triplane was fitted with an 8 cylinder I.A.P.` Together with six unsigned vintage postcards, each showing different images of AVRO aircraft. SANTOS-DUMONT ALBERTO: (1873-1932) Brazilian Pioneer of Aviation, designer and builder of the first practical dirigible balloons. Santos-Dumont also made the first public flight of an airplane, 23rd October 1906. Dark fountain pen ink signature (`A. Santos-Dumont`) on a card with a neatly affixed portrait of the aviator at one side. Dated Buenos Aires, 26th June 1916 in his hand. Some light overall foxing, otherwise VG
CHAMBERLAIN CLARENCE D.: (1893-1976) American Aviator, the second man to pilot a fixed wing aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, while carrying the first transatlantic passenger. Vintage signed 8.5 x 6.5 photograph depicting Chamberlain`s aircraft at Youngstown airport in Ohio. With an oval inset portrait of the pilot wearing his flying cap and goggles. HANNAH JOHN: (1921-1947) British Pilot of World War II, Victoria Cross winner for his actions over Antwerp, Belgium, 15th September 1940. Hannah is the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross for aerial operations. Dark fountain pen ink signature (`J. Hannah VC`) on a piece, neatly mounted to a page removed from an autograph album alongside a small newspaper portrait and neat ink annotation by a collector. Autographs of Hannah are rare in any form following his tragically early death at the age of 25. VG
MALAN A. G. `SAILOR`: (1910-1963) South African RAF Fighter Pilot of World War II. Rare, dark fountain pen ink signature (`A. G. LOCK ERIC S.: (1919-1941) British Fighter Pilot of World War II, the most successful British-born pilot during the Battle of Britain. Rare fountain pen ink signature (`E. S. Lock`) on a small piece neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album alongside a newspaper portrait, Union Jack flag, image of aircraft etc. Autographs of Lock are rare in any form following his tragically early death during World War II. GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Rare, bold green fountain pen ink signature on a piece, neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album alongside a newspaper portrait of Gibson and neat typed quotation by collector etc. VG
BATTLE OF BRITAIN: A First Day Cover commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain 1940-1980, featuring colour images of a Spitfire and Hurricane on separate postage stamps, individually signed by five Battle of Britain pilots, Douglas Bader, Johnnie Johnson, John Cunningham, James Lacey and Robert Stanford Tuck. Each have signed the cover with their names alone in blue ink to light areas. Postally cancelled at Biggin Hill, Kent, 5th October 1980. Together with Douglas Bader (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognised for his important role during the Battle of Britain. Signed First Day Cover commemorating Bader and featuring a colour image of his squadron in flight with an inset portrait. Postally cancelled 12th October 1977. MOORE BOBBY: (1941-1993) English Footballer, Captain of the England World Cup winning team, 1966. An unusual 7 x 10 pennant issued in honour of Bobby Moore, Captain of West Ham United and Captain of the England World Cup winners 1966, featuring a circular portrait of Moore to the centre and the emblems of West Ham and England. Signed and inscribed by Moore to a clear area in blue ink, `Best wishes to Wayne, Bobby Moore`. Professionally mounted and framed and glazed in a wooden box frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 14.5. GRACE W. G.: (1848-1915) English Cricketer. A fine vintage signed sepia 6.5 x 8.5 photograph depicting the bearded cricketer in a head and shoulders pose wearing a cap upon his head. Photograph issued by C. B. Fry`s magazine and bearing their copyright to the lower photographer`s mount. Signed (`W. G. Grace`) in bold, dark ink across a clear area at the base of the image and dated 1907 in his hand. An impressive signed portrait, seldom encountered in this form.
