GEORGE ENGLEHEART (1752-1829) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, PROBABLY MISS JUDITH PARSONS Bust length, wearing a blue dress with white scarf and a bonnet with a blue bow, watercolour on ivory, oval, in a gold frame set into an octagonal ebonised frame with gold slip and gilt metal border 5 x 4cm, Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. G. C. Williamson (George Engleheart, publ. George Bell and Sons, 1942, p.109) records that a Miss Parsons sat to Engleheart in 1778.

Another acrylic portrait on perspex dating to 1977 is illustrated fig. 810. This and the following lot are painted on perspex and are designed to be hung in front of windows allowing light to shine through the works. Ponti designed these 'decorated windows' to give proportion to a room alleviate the monotony of a glass wall and also to provide a change in effect as external conditions vary between day and night. Sold together with a certificate of authenticity signed by Giovanna Rosselli Ponti and dated 14 May 1999.
An Aesthetic Movement carved oak sideboard after the design by Bruce Talbert circa 1885 the rear superstructure with carved portrait roundels and embossed leather panels below the inscription 'God's Providence is Mine Inheritance' the lower section with a carved panelled frieze drawer flanked by cupboard doors 170cm. high by 206cm. wide by 66cm. deep The design of the present sideboard is related to the famous 'Pet' sideboard designed by Bruce J. Talbert and executed by Gillow & Co. for the 1871 International Exhibition in South Kensington. For the exhibition the original light oak sideboard with boxwood carvings was shown within a complete room setting '...intended to suggest the treatment of a Dining Room in the later English style...'. The Exhibition sideboard was afterwards bought by the South Kensington Museum now the Victoria & Albert Museum. It numbers among several remarkable and prize-winning exhibition pieces designed by Talbert including the 'Pericles' sideboard exhibited by Holland and Sons in Paris in 1867 and the 'Juno' cabinet shown by Jackson & Graham in Paris in 1878 the latter also in the collection of the V&A in London. The design for the present sideboard is illustrated in Talbert's second book Examples of Ancient and Modern Furniture published in 1876.. W

Queen Victoria gave many jewelled gifts to ladies in waiting bridesmaids and ladies at court as momentous and gifts of gratitude during her reign such as the brooch offered here
An important Edward VII diamond portrait ring circa 1902 the portrait miniature of Edward VII set beneath a large lasque cut diamond with facetted edges to a surround of twenty three cushion shaped old brilliant cut diamonds the shoulders applied with rose cut diamond set ‘E’ and ‘A’ beneath diamond set crowns standing for King Edward VII and his Queen Alexandra the ring’s locket back bearing a secret hand engraved ‘A’ beneath a heart.. Lasque diamonds have been used by Indian jewellers for centuries.
Racing interest a group of items belonging to jockey Herbert Robbins comprising; a portrait in racing silks an early 20th century gold silver and rose diamond round brooch enclosing a portrait miniature a gold-plated keyless pocket watch with monogram ‘HR’ and a silver and blue enamel cigarette case inscribed Herbert Robbins 18.12.12.’ London 1913 by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co Ltd Provenance; by direct descent. Robbins was a well known jockey based in Lambourn. Though never in the ‘top flight’ he achieved much success between 1913 and 1922 including wins on Furore in the 1916 Irish Derby and the 1917 Cesarewitch on Double Hackle in the Ascot Stakes Northumberland Plate and Prince Edward Handicap in 1922. His most successful season was 1920 when he rode 29 winners. He died in 1927 aged 41.

Note; A native of Liverpool Hargreaves was assistant and pupil of Sir Thomas Lawrence from 1793 after Lawrence had seen one of his portrait miniatures. He exhibited at the Liverpool Academy, The Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy.
