There are several holes and small tears. Very heavy craquelure throughout. It is also rippling and the canvas requires tightening. It has been at the mill since it was made, but over the years has had some work undertaken.

A RARE BOXWOOD SEATED FIGURE OF GU ZHENGUANLate 17th/18th centuryCarved from a solid block, the impassive figure seated on a textile-draped throne above a foot stool, holding a ruyi-sceptre along his right arm, wearing an official hat and a plain robe looped at the sleeves and retained by a simple belt, the surface of even pale lustrous tone, the underside incised with the three-character name Gu Zhenguan.30in (11 3/4in) high.Footnotes:Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價十七世紀晚期/十八世紀 黃楊木雕文人坐像The name carved underneath is of Gu Zhenguan (1637-1714) a well-known scholar and poet. Together with Zhu Yizun (1629-1709) and Chen Weisong (1626-1682), Gu is considered one of the three great masters of 17th century Ci lyric poetry. He is also sometimes grouped with Nalan Xingde (1655-1685) and Cao Zhenji (1634-1698).The present lot could perhaps be a posthumous portrait of Gu Zhenguan. At this time, Tang Ying (1682-1756) also commissioned a soapstone portrait of himself carved by Wang Muzhai, instead of the usual painted portrait on silk or paper, see D.Ko, The Social Life of Inkstones: Artisans and Scholars in Early Qing China, Washington, 2017, p.18, fig.1.2. The style of carving is closely related to Dehua blanc-de-Chine porcelain. There is a small hole in the canvas bottom right. The tension of the canvas is good. The paint surface appears unstable. There are two flecks of white that appear to be later surface accretions. The frame has solid joints and general wear and tear.

Label verso: The Edinburgh Gallery, Light & Colour Exhibition, 1-18 March 1997. Note: Brendan Kelly was born in Edinburgh in 1970 and now lives and works in London. He studied at the Slade School in London for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. His work is held in a number of national collections in the UK including The National Portrait Gallery where he has two portraits, the UK Parliament and the Bank of England. His portrait of the former Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow hangs in the Speaker’s State Rooms at the Palace of Westminster. In 2004 he took part in "Being Present" at Jerwood Space, having just won the De Laszlo Prize for the best portrait by a young artist at the 2004 RP exhibition. Kelly was also commended several times in the BP Portrait Award before winning second prize in 2001 for Nude in a Nightclub. His paintings often begin with a desire to create a particular atmosphere through the use of artificial lighting. Kelly's website shows three fascinating videos which provide an insight into modern day painting techniques. The subjects are David Nish former CEO of Standard Life, General Sir Mike Jackson and "The Herat Room". The latter is an extraordinary short film about the thirteen months it took to complete a commission for the war in Afghanistan.
