§ An extremely important Portrait of René Lalique by his artist daughter Suzanne Lalique (1892-1989) oil on canvas, depicting Rene seated at his desk, signed and dated 1931, 26 x 32in.Provenance: Commissioned by Miss Jessie Boot, collection of The Hon. Majorie Holman, Lord Trent, collection of Mary-Lou Utt (well known Lalique collectors and authors of books on perfume bottles by Lalique), sold by Sotheby's New York, 11th June 1993 Lot 381 for the collection of Mr Joel Shapiro, purchased at Christie's London, 14th Nov. 2017 Lot 48 for the collection of G.G.Weiner.René Lalique (1860-1945) was a French glass designer known for his creations of glass art, perfume bottles, vases, jewellery, chandeliers, clocks and car mascots. In 1892 Lalique had a daughter by his second wife, whom they named Suzanne. Suzanne became an accomplished designer and painter in her own right, without any formal art training. Growing up as close to the great Lalique as one can get, was all the training required. Her vase designs cover two pages in the R.Lalique Catalogue Raisonne, and her paintings and decorative arts are now spread throughout the world. At least two René Lalique production vases were designed by Suzanne Lalique; the vases Sophora and Penthievre. This work is the only recorded portrait of René Lalique painted in his lifetime.
