HOGAN BEN: (1912-1997) American Golfer. Book signed, a hardback edition of Power Golf by Ben Hogan, First English Edition published by Nicholas Kaye, London, 1949. Boldly signed ('Golfingly, Ben Hogan') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower white border beneath the portrait on the frontispiece. With an ownership signature to the front free endpaper. No dust jacket. Some wear to the edges of the spine and cloth boards. G
WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985) American Actor & Film Director, Academy Award winner. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of the young Welles in a head and shoulders pose. The original RKO Radio Pictures publicity portrait dates from 1941, the same year in which Welles directed and starred in Citizen Kane, a film for which he won the Best Actor and Best Director Oscars. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink across a light area of the background. Some very slight, minor discoloration to the image, only lightly affecting the signature. About VG
BOGART HUMPHREY: (1899-1957) American Actor, Academy Award winner. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph depicting Bogey in a head and shoulders pose. The Paramount Pictures publicity portrait dates from 1955. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the image. EX
CINEMA: Graham Moffatt (1919-1965, British Character Actor and Comedian) vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of the actor in a head and shoulders pose in costume as Albert Brown in a scene from Oh! Mr. Porter (1937). Signed in fountain pen ink, largely across a darker area of the image although legible. Scarce in this form; Arthur Askey (1900-1982, English Comedian) vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph, a close-up portrait of Askey. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink across a light area of the image; Margaret Lockwood (1916-1990, British Actress) vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph, an early head and shoulders study of the dark haired actress in costume emerging from a large drum. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. A good trio of signed photographs. VG, 3
GRANT CARY: (1904-1986) British-born American Actor, Academy Award winner. Bold black fountain pen ink signature on a white card. A very minor, light band of discoloration appears to the left edge, not affecting the signature. Together with Tyrone Power (1914-1958, American Actor) Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, a close-up portrait of the handsome actor. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink across a light area at the base of the image. VG, 2
MAXWELL LOIS: (1927-2007) Canadian Actress, famous for her role as Miss Moneypenny in fourteen James Bond films. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, an early image of the actress in a half length pose. The original Warner Brothers publicity portrait has been typically neatly signed in bold blue fountain pen ink across a clear area of the image. Dated 17th June 1949 in her hand, just three years after her screen debut. Signed photographs of Maxwell from this period of her career are scarce. One heavy corner crease, otherwise VG.
THIRD MAN THE: Collection of six pages removed from autograph albums individually signed by five of the main cast members and director of the 1949 film The Third Man comprising Orson Welles (Harry Lime; fountain pen ink, with an attached magazine portrait), Alida Valli (Anna Schmidt; bold fountain pen ink), Trevor Howard (Major Calloway), Bernard Lee (Sergeant Paine), Wilfrid Hyde-White (Crabbin) and Carol Reed (Director; rare bold fountain pen ink signature). Five have added inscriptions in their hands. VG, 6
ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. Programme signed, the printed 4to souvenir programme for a concert by Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars during his second British tour, February-March 1959. Signed ('Louis Armstrong') with a large signature in blue ink to a clear area of the front cover which features a caricature portrait of Satchmo. With small ownership signature in upper right corner. Very light, minor age wear, VG
TRETCHIKOFF VLADIMIR: (1913-2006) Russian Artist. Book signed, a hardback edition of Tretchikoff by Richard Buncher, Special De Luxe Edition published by Howard Timmins, Cape Town, for George Allen & Unwin Ltd., London, Second Printing 1951, this folio edition specially published for America, 1953. Spiral binding with gilt lettering and yellow tanned boards. With various colour and black and white plates tipped in. Limited Edition number 909 of 1500, signed by Tretchikoff to the limitations page, again signed and inscribed to the page and dated Montreal, 2nd November 1954 and signed a third time with his name alone beneath a colour plate of his self portrait. CHALIAPIN FEODOR: (1873-1938) Russian Bass. Vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 7.5 photograph of the singer standing in a full length profile pose on a boat. Chaliapin is seen signing an autograph album for the collector who stands before him. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to the image and dated 1921-1931. Neatly mounted and with some slight surface creasing. Together with a small 2 x 3.5 signed newspaper portrait of Chaliapin and a signed piece, 1927. Both also neatly mounted. G, 3
BARNUM P. T.: (1810-1891) American Showman. A.L.S., P. T. Barnum, one page, 8vo, Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1st August 1881, to Frederick Gutekunst, on Barnum's printed stationery featuring a fine head and shoulders portrait of the showman. Barnum announces that he has found the notepaper among his papers although doesn't know who printed it, continuing 'If you print such photographs, or any kind on note paper, at a price that would bring it within a proper limit for use as business notepaper, I would like to know it.' Barnum further remarks 'The last pictures (Phototypes) which you took of me, I carried to England & gave to my English friends who admired them beyond any pictures they ever saw before.' With blank integral leaf. At the head of the page are a few pencil calculations, evidently reflecting the cost of producing different quantities of the notepaper. One very light stain, just affecting a few words of text, although still perfectly legible. VG. Frederick Gutekunst (1832-1917) German-born American Photographer.
THATCHER MARGARET: (1925- ) British Prime Minister 1979-90. T.L.S., Margaret Thatcher, one page, 4to, House of Commons, London, 25th July 1975, to Miss. Faith Sheppard. Thatcher states that she knows Sir Thomas Monnington quite well and has the greatest admiration and affection for him, continuing 'Indeed, he took me round the Gallery the afternoon when I saw the apalling "Woman in Blue" portrait.' The politician adds that she doesn't know whether or not the portrait sold, commenting 'I certainly would not buy it.' In concluding she adds that she is glad her correspondent liked a photograph of Thatcher's postman, 'He is a very nice person, always cheerful and he gives us excellent service.' Some small tears at the edges and light stains, just affecting the text but not the signature. FR. Sir Walter Thomas Monnington (1902-1976) English Painter, President of the Royal Academy 1966-76.
