A SILVER MOUNTED OVAL TORTOISESHELL HINGE LIDDED ROYALIST SNUFF BOXThe underside decorated with a portrait of the crowned bust of King Charles I within an oval wreath surround, the top with an applied silver mount decorated with a central urn between two birds within a scroll surround, 7.5cm x 6cm (including hinge), offered together with an auction sale catalogue of the contents of The Grange, Levenshulme, May 1904, Lot number 181, and further paperwork detailCondition report: front panel to lid slight wear to the high points, generally looks to be in good condition. The pins holding it to the lid do not correspond with the pierced holes, if indeed these were originally intended to hold them. Portrait to underside has some rubbing. The hinge is in good condition. The tortoise shell generally is of good condition. Two insect (possibly silverfish) marks to front of box. Lid closes well. Tortoise shell is in surprisingly good condition considering the age and may be replaced. It seems strange that there is wear to the portrait of the king underneath yet no significant wear to the tortoise shell. The hinge bracket is not perfectly centred to the panel of the lid.

Father & Mother of General Sir Robert Wilson & Grand Father & Mother of [sic]', on ivory, ovalhe: 4.6 x 3.8cm she: 4.5 x 3.5cm, overall: 7.8 x 6.7cm Provenance: Christie's London, 21 November 1967, lot 24; Bonhams London, 17 November 2004, lot 47. II, pl.316, no.792.The later frame describes the sitters as Sir Belford Hinton Wilson KCB (1804-1858) and his wife Catherine (née Randolph). Sir Belford Hinton Wilson, friend and supporter of the Peruvian liberator Simón Bolívar was not born until 1804 (making him an impossible candidate for a portrait dated 1790), it would appear that the later frame refers to a different miniature.Condition report: Condition appears fine - really lovely hairwork and frame.

The miniature is yellowed and faded with staining at the edges. There is a flake of paint loss lower left. Some cracking to the dark paint by the left edges. Some light surface scratches, specks and dots of surface dirt. Some pale mould or dust in lower section. The glass is scratched and dirty and the case shows signs of wear. The hair verso has areas of dark sticky glue. Old sticky labels verso.
English School, 19th centuryPortrait of a lady, half length, in a black dress and white collaroil on canvas60.5 x 45.5cmBy family repute this is said to be a member of the Pankhurst family.Condition report: The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There is a small, vertical line of damage to the painting in the upper left quadrant. The paint layers in the sitter’s face have developed drying cracks and wrinkles, associated with the drying of the paint layer. The varnish is dull and slightly yellowed with a layer of surface dirt present.
