(31 x 23.2cm.), * This depiction of Christ in profile is taken from an image engraved on the Emerald Vernicle, once part of in the Vatican collection. (75.5 x 50.5cm.), * Provenance: Property of a Channel Islands collector. By descent from her first husband, who bought the painting directly from the artist, when Lazzolo was staying at the former Little Grove Hotel in Jersey with Stephen Ward and Keeler. Lazzolo, a Slade trained portraitist of note and a commercial artist, became a society figure and was invited to paint Prince Phillip's portrait at Buckingham Palace in 1961. Known as one of the attendees at Prince Phillip's stag party in November 1947, he was a member of the infamous 'Thursday Club'. However, against much advice he decided to testify as a character witness for the defence during the trial of Dr. Stephen Ward, as part of 'The Profumo Affair' and was subsequently prosecuted himself and exiled by society, spending the remainder of his life in relative obsucrity in Malta., *Condition: Good condition but would benefit from cleaning. Vertical lines to paint visible throughout from the plywood grain beneath but more obvious under close inspection to LH side of painting. Paint surface dry and there is micro-craquelure around the face, so would probably benefit from attention from a conservator to ensure paint remains stable.

(59.75 x 49.5cm.) , *Condition: The canvas is well stretched. Even but clearly visible craquelure across the entire canvas. Old relining. Repainting visible to top margin and corners with some visual evidence that the canvas had curled here in the past prior to the old restoration taking place. 1in vertical raised line in paint just to left and below red ribbon in hair to left side of canvas - possible old repair - plus another small possible repair just below top left of green bow on front of dress. Feint horizontal line is visible across the centre of canvas, at base of her neck. Frame has losses to crossed ribbons in a number of places, minor other gesso losses and a crack to left hand side of the slip. , Examined under UV - very little is visible as a blocking varnish appears to have been used. A good set of four French portrait miniatures of Napoleon Bonaparte's Generals, 19th century, oval, finely painted in watercolour on ivory, the generals resplendent in full ceremonial uniform, each signed with the initials 'G.S.', 5.8 x 4.7cm., within white metal frames with foliate engraving and laurel wreath surmounts, the backs with inscribed moulded vulcanite plaques naming the general, 'General Mouton', 'General Solignac', 'General Rapp' and 'General Songis'. (4), *Condition:Colours strong and appear to be in very original condition. Each of the miniatures has some very fine pale spotting to the surface when viewed through a 10x lens - it is not visible when viewed by eye. We are not sure if this is on the surface of the miniature or on the underside of the glass - the miniatures have not been removed from the frames so we cannot confirm. General Solignac has a faint, small patch to the paint to the top centre above the hair which is possibly a contact mark with the paint or varnish when originally painted and still wet - it is barely visible except under close examination. One of the vulcanite backs has shrunk a little and there are some glue spots around the edge suggesting it has been secured with glue at some time. Frames very good - they have not been cleaned or polished.

Los 812

Circle of Henry Collen (1798-c.1872), Portrait miniature of a lady, three quarter length, seated in a landscape beneath a tree, in a décolleté white dress, watercolour on ivory, 10.2 x 8.3cm., gilt framed.

Florentine School (early 17th century), Portrait miniature of a noblewoman, half length with her right hand raised to her chest, wearing decorative black and white robes, white ruff, elaborate necklace and jewelled headdress in her upswept hair, rectangular oil on copper, 10 x 7cm., the reverse with engraved armorial, in silver frame with spiralled cresting.* Condition: On examination under UV, there is relatively little evidence of retouching or repainting considering the age of the portrait. There are two small areas of retouching to the left cheek and left side of the forehead, and also a few small probable retouches to the curls of the ruff to the right of the face. There is also some probably strengthening to the darker areas on the dress and some patches of varnish which show under UV. There are small contact rubs to the corners showing the bright copper beneath.

Los 815

(8.9 x 7.6cm.), in gilt brass bead and foliate easel back frame with foliate ribbon tied surmount, scratch inscribed to frame verso.* Condition: A narrow line of abrasion at the edge of the painting - the most noticeable approx.. 1in long & 1/8in wide at 9 o'clock and a small area of retouching at 3 o'clock approx.. 1/4in above the ermine cuff. A small area of abrasion, partially through the red surface of the curtaining, from the centre to the edge at 10 o'clock. Los 820

A rare set of seventeen 17th century oil on mica 'talc' transparencies for use with a portrait miniature of Charles I, each oval mica sheet painted in oils with a different overlay image to alter the portrait of the late King, showing his life before captivity, during his imprisonment and execution and his subsequent martyrdom, including his crown, ermine robe and sceptre, through armour and prison garb, a set of prison window bars, the warrant for execution being shown to the king, his hands being bound and eyes bandaged, his severed head held aloft, the headless torso and the head re-united, plus others, each sheet 3 x 2½in. (7.7 x 6.2cm.), with a small quantity of related paperwork, letters etc., * Two similar, incomplete set of micas are included in The Royal Collection, one featuring twelve sheets, the other nineteen, each with the associated oil on copper portrait of Charles I., *Condition:All of the overlays have some losses - please see photos. Thirteen are largely complete (one is in two pieces) and four are just a fragment of the original - of these, two are missing a clear, unpainted section only. The original companion miniature is missing.

Los 821

A pair of 19th century French portrait miniatures in shagreen frames, depicting 18th century noblewomen, one signed 'Robin', the other signed indistinctly, oval watercolour on ivory, within shagreen frames with silver slips chased with wrigglework, 7.8 x 6.5cm overall. (2), *Condition:Miniatures in good condition with no splits or other damage to ivory. Colours good. Some dirt speckling beneath glass. On one frame, the shagreen is lifting a little at top and bottom and there is a small split to the lower right. The other frame has more obvious lifting and shrinkage to the shagreen around the edges. Both silver slips tarnished. Both have later mid-20th century backing paper & hanging rings to the reverse.

Los 822

French School (19th century), Portrait miniature of a lady, half length, in royal blue dress with lace trim, white shawl and elaborate necklace, her hair decorated with gilt and black jewels, falling over her left shoulder, oval watercolour on ivory, 9.7 x 7.3cm., in a gilt brass bead and foliate frame with ribboned surmount, inscribed verso, 'Une Dame Inconnue'.* Condition: As there are seven very small pins holding the painting in the frame which have been cut level with the metal work and are undisturbed, it would be virtually impossible to remove the miniature without the risk of damage. Because of this, it appears that it has never been removed from the frame, so there is no evidence of any damage to the paint. However, it has moved a little to one side and downwards in the frame, exposing the partially painted surface at the edge. There is a small area at the bottom of the blue dress which appears slightly yellowed - even under examination with strong magnification, we cannot decide whether this was intentional or is age related discoloration. On close examination, we believe this is more likely to be on vellum than ivory as catalogued.

Los 823

English School (late 18th century), Portrait of a lady, in a red dress with white frilled border and blue shawl, her hair falling onto her left shoulder, oval watercolour on ivory, 6 x 4.7cm., in a fish skin case.* Condition: There is no sign of any warping or cracking to the ivory. The case is in good order - hinge and catches intact and skin showing virtually no wear. There are two pinhead size marks to the surface of the portrait - one to left centre of the chest and one to the right of the top curl over her shoulder. There are a few more, smaller marks to the background above the shoulder on the left side - these marks appear to be fungal which could be treated. A small area of greenish paint on the jaw and lower part of the cheek on the right side, which on close examination appears to be consistent in colour with that of the shading of the neck, probably due to deterioration of the surface flesh colouring.

Los 824
