She was popularly known as 'Perdita' (the heroine in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) which she played in 1779 at Drury Lane, her performance attracting the attention of the Prince of Wales, who offered her twenty thousand pounds to become his mistress. Needless to say he ended the affair in 1781, without paying up, and later she became known as 'the English Sappho' for her poems, and along with her contemporary Mary Wollstonecraft, championed women's rights. A Norman Hartnell couture ivory and gold sequined evening gown, circa 1938, labelled, with handwritten client name 'Lady Harvey', scalloped illusion neckline of nude tulle, the ground entirely covered with swirling motif beaded with gold sequins and miniscule seed beads; together with a 'Finnigans of Bond St' box and with handwritten note 'Lady Barclay-Harvey', bust 106cm, 42in (3) Provenance: Probably worn by Lady Muriel Felicia Vere Barclay-Harvey, née Bertie, (b.1893-d.1980), daughter of the 12th Earl of Lindsey. She was a nurse and founder of the Lady Muriel Nurses' Club; former wife of Henry Liddell-Grainger, and later the second wife of Sir Charles Malcolm Barclay-Harvey (b.2nd March 1890 - d.17th November 1969), whom she married in 1938. He was a British politician and Governor of South Australia from 12th August 1939 until 26th April 1944. The National Portrait Gallery has a photographic portrait of her within their collection, wearing her nurses uniform and taken in 1916 by Bassano Ltd. CONDITION REPORT: Dress has been let out approx 1in along centre front seam and this area has been re-embellished. Tulle neckline and shoulder straps are fragile and has new tulle panels attached to straps. Piece of original tulle is detached, hole in tulle centre front neckline. Tulle has been removed at left and right underarms. Centre front skirt seam has been let out but probably by Hartnell - extremely well done. Waist altered to correspond. Tarnishing centre back hem area. Smells of moth balls. The beading to dress is good and intact.
An Ossie Clark 'Heavenly Twins' black and red wool jersey dress, circa 1970, printed black on white satin label and size 12, with red band spiralling up the arm, ties to neck, wrap-around, midi length, bust approx 86-92cm, 34-36in A full-length version of this dress was worn by Celia Birtwell in David Hockney's famous portrait, 'Mr & Mrs Clark & Percy'. CONDITION REPORT: good condition. Hem and neckties have been shortened. Left cuff needs re-stitching (minor).
A pencil portrait of HRH Prince Edward, dated 18th May, 1919, signed Collings, and dedicated in pencil to Freda Dudley Ward 'I am a sorry little boy tonight - Forgive me pleath Fredie - David (11.30 pm), 16 by 12cm, 6 1/4 by 4 3/4in CONDITION REPORT: Dog-ear crease bottom left corner and small crease centre top. There are scuffs to paper finish down left side, grey smudge marks from old finger prints.
