The painting shows the relief of Ladysmith and features Winston Churchill, acting as a war correspondant, as the third figure from the left in the painting. In a letter that appeared in The Times in July 1901 Lucy Kemp-Welch was accused of historical inaccuracy in depicting Winston Churchill at Ladysmith. Churchill wrote to the paper refuting the accusations made against the artist and stated that the depiction was correct. The painting first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1901, The painting is owned by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Devon.

The Fair Days at KinvaraCharter of George III to Robert Gregory of Coole Lodge, Co. Galway Royal Letters patent dated 12 January, 15th of George III (1775), granting to Robert Gregory of Coole Lodge, Co. Galway, Esq., the right to hold two fairs annually and a weekly market on Wednesdays, with court of pye powder, at Kinvara. Handwritten on vellum in English, with an elaborate printed border depicting the king's portrait and the arms and emblems of Great Britain, Ireland and France. Large seal, mostly intact.Robert Gregory of Co. Galway (1727-1810) made his fortune in India and on his return home purchased several landed estates, including Coole (1768) where he built "a large house with numerous offices", Ballylee, and Kinvarra. He was assiduous in developing his estate - hence this grant of two annual fairs and a weekly market in Kinvarra. He was also an MP at Westminster, a director of the East India Company, and a friend of Charles James Fox and Edmund Burke. He supported liberal issues such as concessions to Catholics, refused to accept bribes, and denounced political corruption - all of which greatly reduced his fortune. A contemporary described him as "a very honourable, incorrupt, independent man … laborious, attentive to business" (Bridget Hourican in Dictionary of Irish Biography). His great-grandson Sir William Henry Gregory was the husband of Yeats's associate Lady Gregory, as a m/ss., w.a.f.
