MARX BROTHERS THE: Groucho Marx (1890-1977) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. Vintage dark fountain pen ink signature ('Groucho Marx') on a page removed from an autograph album. With a neatly attached newspaper portrait to one side and annotated and dated by a collector to the base of the page, 23rd May 1948; Chico Marx (1887-1961) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. Vintage bold black fountain pen ink signature ('Kindest regards, Chico Marx') on a page removed from an autograph album; Harpo Marx (1888-1964) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Marx seated in a half length pose playing his trademark harp. Signed in blue ink at the head of the image with slightly weaker contrast; Zeppo Marx (1901-1979) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. D.S., Zeppo Marx, being a signed cheque, Los Angeles, California, 14th February 1973. The cheque is drawn on the Security Pacific National Bank and is made payable to the Southern California Gas Company for the sum of $23.33. The signature is not affected by any bank cancellations. PADEREWSKI I. J.: (1860-1941) Polish Pianist & Composer, Prime Minister of Poland, 1919. Vintage signed 11 x 17 photograph of Paderewski in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by (John) Furley Lewis. Signed by Paderewski with his name alone in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. Also signed in pencil by Furley Lewis to the lower mount and with an additional inscription in his hand, 'To my dear friend, Alfred Henry, in grateful appreciation of his own music, this portrait of the maestro', and dated 1914 in his hand. Some light wrinkling and scuffing to the image and some creasing and minor staining to the photographer's mount. G
SULLY THOMAS: (1783-1872) British-born American Portrait Painter whose subjects included Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and the Marquis de Lafayette. A.L.S., Thos. Sully, one page, 8vo, n.p., 9th April 1856, to Messrs. Taylor. Sully states that he is impressed with his correspondent's gift of soap and comments 'If you will add to your kindness by showing me how I may serve you, it would, in some measure, relieve me from the weight of obligation you have conferred'. WARHOL ANDY: (1928-1987) American Pop Artist. Book signed, a hardback edition of Popism - The Warhol 60s, First Edition published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York, 1980 (stated First Edition with letters BCDE printed to copyright page). Signed by Warhol in black ink with his name alone to the half title page. The black ink that Warhol used has also left a slight impression of his signature on the two pages immediately before and after the half title. Accompanied by the dust jacket which is also signed by Warhol with his initials ('AW') in black ink to a clear area at the head above his portrait and printed title. WELLS H. G.: (1866-1946) English Writer of Science Fiction novels. A.L.S., H. G. Wells, one page, 4to, Regent's Park, 21st April 1938, to Mr. Sternberger. Wells writes, in full, 'The photographs you left here are all very artistic pieces of work & nos 6 & 14 are admirable likenesses, easy & dignified. Thank you'. Some light overall staining caused by previous mounting to the verso, only very slightly affecting the text and signature, otherwise about VG Marcel Sternberger (1899-1956) Hungarian Portrait Photographer.
NADAR: (1820-1910) Gaspard-Felix Tournachon. French Photographer & Caricaturist. Vintage signed carte-de-visite photograph, the fine albumen print depicting Nadar in a self-portrait, wearing a top hat and with a pair of binoculars in one hand, standing in the gondola of a hot air balloon. With imprint N to the lower left corner of the image and again in red to the lower photographer's mount and verso. Signed ('Nadar photographie') by the photographer in black fountain pen ink to the upper edge of the verso. Rare. About EX Nadar was a keen balloonist and in 1858 became the first person to take aerial photographs.

Published as part of the Cabinet Portrait Gallery series between 1890-94 and with printed text to the lower mount. KEYNES JOHN MAYNARD: (1883-1946) British Economist, a member of the Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. T.L.S., J M Keynes, one page, 4to, Gordon Square, Bloomsbury, 21st February 1937, to Leon M. Lion. Keynes announces 'Perhaps you will have seen that we are bringing our production of the Misanthrope to the Ambassadors' and adds that he hopes Lion will be able to see it, remarking 'Let me know if I can send you tickets for one evening'. Professionally matted in burgundy and grey alongside a portrait and framed and glazed in a silver coloured wooden frame to an overall size of 18.5 x 14.5. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Leon M. Lion (1879-1947) English Stage and Film Actor. Keynes took an interest in literature and drama and was a keen supporter of the arts. Having married Russian ballet dancer Lydia Lopokova (1892-1981) in 1925, Keynes financed all the productions in which she appeared, including her role as Celemine in The Misanthrope, referred to in the present letter.
[JAMES II & VII]: (1633-1701) King of England & Ireland and King of Scotland (as James VII) 1685-88. A good, large document with an Initial Letter Portrait, one page (vellum), large folio, Westminster, c.1686-88, in Latin. The fine steel engraved portrait of King James II appears to the left of his name ('Jacobus Secundus Dei gra') and a highly attractive and ornate upper border featuring images of a lion, dragon, unicorn and serpents. With additional borders to the left and right featuring a simpler design of foliage. The manuscript Latin text constitutes a foot of the fine and states, in part, 'Know Ye that among the records and Feet of Fines with the proclamations thereof made according to the form of the Statute in that case lately enacted and provided....This is the Final Concord made in the court of our Lord King at Westminster...' Signed ('J Rex') on behalf of the King in the hand of a Court officer at the foot to the strips of vellum which would have originally been attached to the seal (no longer present). With some light overall age wear, most evident at the folds. About VG
CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, one page, 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, London, 29th February 1956, to Desmond Flower ('My dear Desmond'). Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letters and 'encouraging enclosures'. Together with a series of four carbon typed copies of letters from Flower to Churchill, each signed with his initials ('DF'), each one page, 4to, n.p., 20th - 28th February 1956, all to Churchill, in the first sending a small colour reproduction of the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I and commenting 'The original belongs to the Duke of Bedford at Woburn. It is the right shape, and I hope you will agree that it will make a good jacket for Vol. II.' and in the other letters referring to a television discussion for NBC which Churchill does not wish to undertake, forwarding a copy of a letter from A. L. Rowse, and a circular from Alfred Wilson of Henry Young's bookshop in Liverpool, as well as twelve early copies of Volume I of The History of the English Speaking Peoples. None of the enclosures are any longer present. One file hole to the upper left corner of Churchill's letter, not affecting the text or signature, VG, 5 Desmond Flower (1907-1997) British Publisher and Book Collector. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (1956-58) is a four volume history of Britain and its former colonies covering the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain (55 BC) to the beginning of World War I (1914). The work was one of Churchill's writings mentioned in his Nobel Prize in Literature citation.

Photograph by Dorys of Warsaw and bearing his blindstamp in the lower left corner. Signed by Laval in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount, in his capacity as Swedish Military Attache. Dated Warsaw, June 1937 in his hand. REID WALLACE: (1891-1923) American Actor of the silent screen, known as the screen's most perfect lover. Rare, bold dark fountain pen ink signature ('Cordially, Wallace Reid') on a plain postcard with a magazine portrait of the actor neatly affixed above the signature. Autographs of Reid are rare as a result of his early death at the age of 31 through an addiction to morphine. VG

An unusual First Day Cover commemorating Eisenhower and featuring his portrait, individually signed by each of the twelve Honorary Pall Bearers at his funeral, comprising Edgar Eisenhower (1889-1971) American Lawyer, elder brother of Dwight Eisenhower, Milton Eisenhower (1899-1985) American Educational Administrator, younger brother of Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley (1893-1981) American General of World War II, J. Lawton Collins (1896-1987) American General of World War II, Lauris Norstad (1907-1988) American General in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, Wade Haislip (1889-1971) American General of World War II, Alfred Gruenther (1899-1983) American General of World War II, Leonard Heaton (1902-1983) American Surgeon General who served in World War II, George W. Anderson (1906-1992) American Admiral who served in World War II, Lewis Strauss (1896-1974) American Businessman & Philanthropist, a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons and power in America, G. Gordon Moore ( - ) American Colonel, brother-in-law of Eisenhower and John Moaney (1914-1978) American Army officer, Eisenhower's personal valet. All have signed in bold blue or black inks with their names alone, largely to clear areas. The cover bears a postage stamp featuring Eisenhower's portrait and is postmarked at Abilene, Kansas, 14th October 1969. VG Eisenhower was interred on 2nd April 1969 in a small chapel in the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library in his hometown of Abilene in Kansas. He was buried as a General of the Army. There were ten Honorary Pall Bearers at Eisenhower's funeral service in Washington DC on 31st March 1969, all but one of whom also served as Honorary Pall Bearers for Eisenhower's interment. Milton Eisenhower fell ill and was hospitalised for the latter event and was replaced by General Andrew Goodpaster.

FOLLOWER OF MAURICE QUENTIN DELATOUR (1704-1788) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, PROBABLY CAMILLE DESMOULINS (1760-1794) Quarter length, wearing a blue coat, cream waistcoat and neckcloth, pastels, oval 62.5 x 50.5cm. * Desmoulins was a politician and journalist, a childhood friend of Maximilien Robespierre and an anti-Royalist ally of Jean-Paul Marat. He agitated hard for a Republican France but was executed in April 1794 after a maddened scuffle on his way to the guillotine.
