ENGLISH SCHOOL (CIRCA 1825)PORTRAIT OF A TUTOR WITH HIS TWO CHARGES, ONE POINTING TO SOUTH AMERICA ON A GLOBEOil on canvas117 x 106.5cm (46 x 41¾ in.)Provenance:Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough.Anonymous sale. Christie's, London, 11 June 1999, lot 55.With Wilkins and Wilkins.Literature:C. Plante, Inside Out: Historic Watercolour Drawings, Oil Sketches and Paintings of Interiors and Exteriors 1770-1870, London, 2000, no. 36. This family group portrait is of particular interest to the furniture historian, as the painter has paid a significant amount of attention to details such as the globe, on which one can read the name Cary as globe-maker. The form of the globe-stand is one utilised by the great Lancaster based firm of Gillows and the visible furniture in the room - centre table, sabre leg chairs, chimney piece, and overmantel looking glass - are indeed all typical of their designs, as recorded in their extensive archives. The composition of this oil painting gives prominence to the young man seated in the centre, apparently a naval officer. A sea-shell from the southern hemisphere prominently displayed upon the chimney piece indicates a memento of a recent voyage, perhaps the profession of the black-clad brother inspecting either the destination or recent port of call of his adventurous brother. The more sombre black-clad figure at the table is most likely a tutor or a legal guardian, as indicated by the large open book. An earlier portrait upon the wall hints at family clerical connections.

Removed from Rawdon Hall in 1870 Returned to Rawdon from Ardwell House in 1947Catalogue Note:By family repute this present picture was commissioned by Sir George Rawdon 1st Bt. for Rawdon Hall. Upon the Briggs family tenancy of Rawdon in 1870 it was removed by Gilbert Theophilus Clifton-Hastings-Campbell, 3rd Baron Donington who lived in London. It was inherited by his daughter, The Hon. Margaret MacTaggart-Stewart nee Hastings-Campbell, who resided at Ardwell House, Dumfries and Galloway. It was returned to Rawdon upon the tenancy of a family friend, Judge Richard Nevin in 1947.Sir George Rawdon 1st Bt was the son of Francis Rawdon and Dorothy Aldeburgh. He made his fortune through the patronage of the Conway family. He was a successful military commander acting as secretary to the first and second Viscounts Conway, and through marriage to the sister, and only surviving sibling, of the third Viscount and first Earl his influence grew further. He rose to prominence serving in Ireland following the Catholic rebellion in Ulster in 1641.
