ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1790 Portrait Miniature of George Hawks (1766-1820) silhouette on card, circular, 2 1/2in diam (6.4cm); a Portrait Silhouette of Susanna Stanley (d.1829 married George Hawks); a Portrait Silhouette on glass of a Gentleman, by another hand; and three cut out silhouettes of Gentlemen; six (6) George Hawks was a partner in Hawks & Co, iron founders of Gateshead. The firm had originally been founded by his grandfather. William Hawks (1708-1755), who established the Gateshead Iron Works in 1754. The firm soon became well known as wrought and cast iron, chain cable and anchor manufacturers

AUGUSTIN EDOUART (1789-1861) Portrait of Nicholas Robinson (1769-1854) signed and dated 1837 10 1/2 x 7in (26.7 x 17.8cm); and two other portrait sketches depicting Gentlemen, by other hands. three (3) Nicholas Robinson was a prosperous Corn Merchant who bought the Sudley Estate, Liverpool. He became . Mayor of Liverpool in 1828-9. Edouart came to England in 1814. For the next twenty years he practised throughout Britain. His impressive list of sitters included Nathan Rothschild, Sir Walter Scott, and King Charles X of France.

He is recorded as working until at least 1830

Chadwick` (lower right) watercolour 18 x 14in (45.7 x 35.6cm) and two other watercolours by the artist depicting `Ferndale, Edgbaston` and `Church Hill Cottage` (homes of the sitter); three (3) Provenance: Joseph P. Barrows, J.P.; thence by by family descent Joseph Barrows was a prominent businessman in Birmingham. He was educated at King Edwatd`s School, Birmingham, and later worked in the the family firm of Vintners `Joseph Barrows & Co. , He was involved in a number of charitable causes and Public Work within the city. In 1890 he was elected J.P for Birmingham, and he also served as a Magistrate for Warwickshire. In 1901 the Wine Annual wrote of him `Mr Barrows is a genial and kindly patron of the Fine Arts, and possesses one of the choicest collection of modern paintings in the Midlands.He resides at Ferndale, Edgbaston, and sometimes at his cottage on the Lickey Hills, Worcestershire, the latter forming an ideal retreat`

George of Henley and his Mare `Little Thought of` on Ludlow racecourse, 1820 oil on board 16 x 21 1/2in (40.6 x 54.6cm) Sold with a coloured aquatint after this painting. A printed inscription on the title plate of the print provides a fuller description of the subject matter depicted- `Portrait of Mr Thomas George of Henley and his Mare `Little Thought of` November 1820, the above mare 14 hands high in a match against Time performed the distance of 19 miles in 58 minutes over Ludlow Race Course. Rode by Mr George. 70 years of age and weighing 10 stones` William Gwynn the artist was the son of John Gwynn, recorded in the 1790`s as `a labourer `of Corve Street, Ludlow. William became an accomplished local artist, print maker and publisher.His diverse output included horse,pig, and cattle portraits as well as estate landscapes and portraits of local gentry.
