A cased set of six enamelled buttons, each richly-enamelled with a portrait of a lady to the centre, her hair adorned with flowers, titled with name of flower to reverse of each button: 'Fushcia', 'Capucines', 'Roses', 'Violettes', 'Glayeuls' and 'Yris', all initialled 'B.D.' on back and signed 'Ler..y' on front, (two a/f), 2.4cm diameter.
2nd century BC. A plano-convex discoid seal with portrait profile bust to the flat face, possibly of King Aretas I. 11 grams, 18mm (3/4"). Property of an North American collector; acquired in the 1970s. Aretas I is the first known Nabatean king, whose name appears on the earliest known Nabatean inscription, a 2nd century BC carving from Halutza. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
1st century BC-1st century AD. A marble portrait head of a noble Julio-Claudian boy, possibly the prince Gaius Caesar, with short hair falling in delicately incised waves, deep-set eyes, small, full lips and a distinctive, narrow chin; supplied with a custom-made stand. The short, wavy hairstyle, deep-set eyes and narrow chin bear similarities with a Julio-Claudian marble portrait head held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 2011.376, that is commonly identified as Gaius Caesar. Close parallels, in terms of facial shape and features, can also be made with the portrait of Gaius held by the University of Innsbruck, inv.no. I/507; see F. Krinzinger, Das Bildnis des jugendlichen Augustus von Velia, AA 1976, 91-101 for parallels. 28 cm including stand (11"). Property of a gentleman; previously from a German collection formed in the early 1980s. The child of Julia Augusta and Marcus Agrippa, Gaius was adopted by his maternal grandfather Augustus, who designated him (alongside Gaius' younger brother Lucius) as his heirs. At the age of 14, Gaius was granted the honorific title of 'Princeps Iuventutis' (Prince of Youth), and at 20 became a consul. Embarking on a military career, Gaius died whilst on campaign in Lycia at the age of 24, leaving no heirs. According to Tacitus (Annals, 1.3), Augustus' wife Livia was suspected of foul play in his death, seeking as she did to install her son Tiberius as Augustus' successor. Fine condition, small loss to nose.

Issued for Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II, 1977, comprising nine 45 gram silver medallions (hallmarked to edge Birmingham, 'script B' date letter for 1976) for Margaret Maid of Norway, Mary I, Mary II, Elizabeth I, Lady Jane Grey, Mary Queen of Scots, Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II. Obvs: portrait (except for Margaret which shows a medieval ship) with name and dates of birth and death. Revs: crown with QUEENS OF THE BRITISH ISLES legend, except Elizabeth II which shows Royal arms and no legend; in plastic capsules with wood box of issue with brass descriptive plate to lid. 970 grams total (405 grams silver). [9] FDC; some light toning. 5,000 sets struck for issue.

1st century AD. A discoid garnet plaque with chamfered edge, intaglio profile portrait bust of Germanicus Julius Caesar. 0.49 grams, 12mm (1/2"). Property of a Middlesex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. Germanicus Julius Caesar (24 May 15 BC - 10 October AD 19) is better known to the modern world as 'Germanicus', having abandoned his birth-name of Nero Claudius Drusus. He was a famed military commander and member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, born in Rome, brother to the later Emperor Claudius who set in motion the invasion of Britain. The agnomen 'Germanicus' was bestowed on him posthumously in recognition of a military campaign against the tribes across the Rhine. Rome's disastrous venture beyond the Rhineland and the resulting clades Variana in 9 AD, in which three legions and their supporting troops were wiped out, was considered a great stain on the reputation of the Roman military, which Germanicus's incursions were supposed to avenge. His early death, aged just 34, in Egypt enhanced his reputation as a great leader whose death came too early. There was much speculation that his death was ordered by Emperor Tiberius who may have seen the soldier's popularity as a threat. Extremely fine condition.
1st century BC. A rectangular parcel-gilt silver appliqué with mounting hole to each corner, stamped profile bust of a goddess with wreath and rosette to the neck, within a beaded border; bust gilded for contrast. Cf. similar portrait with beaded border on the reverse of a denarius struck by P. Clodius (42 BC) in Toynbee, J.C. Roman Historical Portraits, London, 1978, fig.29. 2.23 grams, 30mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Fine condition.

18th Century British School A PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG NOBLEWOMAN WEARING A BLUE DRESS AND PEARLS IN HER HAIR; WITH FAMILY ARMORIAL UPPER LEFT signed or inscribed 'Margaret Ward and dated 1737' oil on canvas 74 x 62cms; 29 x 24 1/4in. An un-dated letter attached to the rear of the frame attributes this picture to Thomas Bardwell (d.1780).
Circle of George Gray (1758-1819) A PORTRAIT OF ARCHIBALD REED ESQ., SHERIFF OF NEWCASTLE IN 1794 WEARING ROBES OF OFFICE AND HOLDING A PLAN OF THE WESTGATE oil on canvas 150 x 119cms; 59 x 46 3/4in. NB Archibald Reed was the seventh child and youngest son of Christopher Reed of Chipchase Castle. He was educated at the Grammar School, Newcastle, and served his time with a member of the Merchants' Company, beginning business on his own account in 1790 on the Sandhill. He was elected Sheriff in 1794, Alderman in 1796, Mayor in 1799, 1806, 1819, 1826, 1830 and 1831 and was undoubtedly one of the most popular men of his day. It was during his fourth mayoralty that the Duke of Wellington visited Newcastle. At this time the salary of the Mayor was £2,100 with free use of the Mansion House, carriage and horses, state barge, etc. Reed died December 13th 1842. He had lived some years in Whorlton, but at the time of his death was residing in Leazes Terrace, Newcastle. He was interred in Jesmond Cemetery, where in March 1844 a handsome monument was erected by public subscription. There is a bust and tablet by the sculptor Richard Davies in St. Nicholas' Cathedral dedicated to his memory. See illustration

19th Century British School A PORTRAIT OF THE CARGO SHIP EVERILDA UNDER STEAM AND SAIL indistinctly signed oil on canvas 61 x 91cms; 24 x 36in. NB The Everilda (1366 tonnes) was built in 1882 by Thomas Turnbull & Sons, Whitby. She was powered by an engine manufactured by T. Richardson & Sons, Hartlepool, and owned successively by Maclay & McIntyre Ltd., Glasgow, United Shipping Company, Glasgow Navigation Company (1894-1904) and L. Nilsson A. (1904-1914), on December 6th 1914 on voyage from Stockholm to Mantyluoto laden with general cargo, was struck by a mine seven miles south west of the Finnish coast. Dimensions of the ship 74.1 x 10.4 x 5.5 metres.
