Hammers Portrait Gallery Signed Football Pictures: From the 1960s Newham Recorder series there are 13 black and white portraits of which 11 are signed including Bennett Redknapp Presland Boyce Dawkins Standen Charles Bovington Sissons Peters and Hurst. Borders have celotape marks not affecting any photos. (13)

SUFFRAGETTE DEFACED COIN . A scarce detector find 1d coin defaced with a “votes for women” punched slogan across the king’s portrait. These coins were produced by the suffragette movement and entered circulation promoting the women’s rights issues. A similar coin was used on the British Museum’s promotional poster for the exhibition “Change is Good” 200 years of coins held at the museum in 2013. Although there are reproduction suffragette coins, this is an original period example, the stamps being of the correct font to correspond with examples held at the British Museum coin collection. 30-40
* JAMES W FERGUSON RGI (SCOTTISH 1916 - 1963), PORTRAIT OF SAMUEL JOHN PEPLOE oil on canvas, signed 77cm x 64cm Framed Note: By repute a portrait of Peploe executed by James Ferguson in the 1930s. Little is known about Ferguson, yet his works often appear on the art market - almost exclusively landscape views around south west Scotland. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art, of which he was a member, and he lived for many years in Glasgow.
SIR JOHN LAVERY RA RSA RHA (IRISH 1856 - 1941), BAILLIE ROBERT CRAWFORD oil on canvas, signed 35.5cm x 25.5cm Framed Label verso: Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow Provenance: George Smith Collection, Exhibited at the Hunterian Gallery, Glasgow. Private collection 1999 - present. George Smith (1907-1997) was a Glasgow-based accountant who bequeathed many of the works in his collection to the Hunterian gallery. Note: Baillie Robert Crawford came to Glasgow in the late 1850s, where he became partner in the firm of Burns, Crawford & Co. In 1883 he entered Glasgow Town Council where he threw himself at once into the work of health and sanitation, and was Chairman of the Health Committee for eleven years promoted many drastic and far-reaching reforms. Crawford was a strenuous advocate of parks and open spaces, of music for the people, and of all movements towards the improvement of public amenities. He was also Deputy-Chairman of the historic Glasgow Commission on the Housing of the Poor, and as Chairman of the Committee on art Galleries and Museums, Crawford bought Whistler's portrait of Thomas Carlyle for the Corporation, and he took a strong part in the movement which resulted in the building of the new Corporation Art Galleries at Kelvingrove. Amongst his many positions, Crawford held the important position of Joint-Chairman of the Fine arts and Scottish History Sections at the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901. The commission for this portrait may have arisen out of Lavery's major work, 'The State Visit of Queen Victoria to the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1888,' completed in 1890.
* ARCHIBALD RUSSELL WATSON ALLAN RSA (SCOTTISH 1878 - 1959), MIDSUMMER FLOWERS oil on board, signed 75cm x 53cm Framed and under glass. Note: Allan was educated at the Collegiate School in Glasgow and the Greenock Academy. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under the portrait painter John Spiers and at the Academie Julian and Colorossi's in Paris. After a successful commercial career in Scotland he was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1937. He lived for many years in Stirling. His work has been widely exhibited in public collections in Scotland and the North of England. Provenance- from a private collection in North Wales.
