Ashendene Press Interest - A collection of early 20th Century woodcut proofs and pages produced by the Ashendene Press, to include 'The Printer at Work' a portrait of Charles St John Hornby by R A Maynard, together with an accompanying handwritten letter dated 1928 from Charles St John HornbyC H St John Hornby was a founding partner in W H Smith & Sons, but he set up his own press to print books for his family and friends. The Ashendene Press was founded in 1895 and continued until 1935, with a break during the First World War from 1915 to 1920.

Albin Roberts Burt, (1783-1842) - Two early 19th Century oval portrait miniatures on card, each depicting a lady (probably related), one facing to dexter, wearing white mob cap, signed in ink verso "Painted by A R Burt Worcester October 181*" (1813?), the other to sinister, with tied curly hair and bead necklace, unsigned, both 7cm x 5.5cm, in similar ebonised frames (2)Albin Roberts Burt trained initially as an engraver under Robert Threw and Benjamin Smith, before undertaking a signed 1802 portrait on silk of Lord Nelson (sold Charles Miller Ltd, 8th November 2016, lot 71). A mirror-image print of Lord Nelson was also used by Flight, Barr & Barr for a commemorative jug in 1805 (sold Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury. 8th September 2021 lot 219. Burt's connections to Lord Nelson are well-recorded. His brother, Henry Frederick, was Nelson's secretary, and Albin Burt himself was a close friend of both Sir William and Emma Hamilton. In the footnotes to the aforementioned Bonhams lot, two of the Burt's children are recorded to have been named Nelson Burt (d. 1822) and Emma Hamilton Burt. There is a some resemblance in the facial features of our sitter(s) to a known portrait of the artist's wife, Sarah Burt (nee Jones) with her children, sold Bonhams, 19th November 2008, lot 112.
Early 19th Century English School - Oil on ivory - Half-length portrait miniature of a lady, circa 1830, in finely cast ormolu frame under glass, 10cm x 8cmSold with AHPA ivory permit V8VEU7YU.Successful bidders must organise shipping and any relevent documentation (including for resale if applicable)The ivory has not been removed from the frame as it is securely fixed behind a piece of board. From the front, we are unable to see any cracks. The ivory appears to be fairly flat, with just a little rippling. The colours look good, though we assume there is some slight fading. We can make out some light surface scratches to the surface of the painting.The frame has damage to the back around one of the screw fixings. Some light wear, which is heavier to the back, but the finish is generally in good order. The back has a stamped mark reading 'JA'.

STUKELEY, William. Stonehenge: A Temple Restored to the British Druids, Folio 1740. Bound with Abury, A Temple of the British Druids, 1743. First work has portrait frontis and 35 plates, many of them folding. Second work has 40 plates. Half black calf, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Please note that this book is a reprint published circa 1835.
BOSWELL, James. The Life of Samuel Johnson, 2 vols, 4to, first edition 1791. With portrait and two plates, and 'give' reading on p135 of vol 1. With the seven cancelled leaves usually found (2M4 & 2N1 in vol 1, and E3, 2O4, 2Q3, 2Z1 & 3E2 in vol 2, all cancels except 2N1 with signatures in square brackets). Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked with original spine relaid. Bookplate of Lord Dinorben. Good margins.

Some minor craquelure across the red to the left and the blue on the dress. Silhouette has rubbing to extremities and damage to the surface colour.
A 19th Century Continental porcelain rectangular lidded box, the top painted with figures in a garden setting with sheep, goats and alligator opening to reveal an oval portrait study of of woman drinking hot chocolate, the sides decorated with various figures in landscape settings with sheep, the base similarly decorated 9 cm x 7 cm x 4.5 cm together with a 19th Century carved mother of pearl and brass bound rectangular box, the panels depicting love birds 6.6 cm x 4.8 cm x 3 cm CONDITION REPORTS The porcelain box has been broken and restored particularly evident to the lid. Staining and discolouration throughout. There is a chip to the back of the base of the box. Surface scratches, etc. Wear to the gilding and paint. Heavy wear and tear conducive with age and use. See images for further detail.The mother of pearl mounted box - there is wear to the mother of pearl on the lid and open gaps revealing mount. Is cracked to the base. Surface scratches, etc. Remnants of glue. The lid does not close properly. The mother of pearl on the lid has been later backed with something. In need of some TLC. See images for further detail.
