There is scattered retouching to the paint surface - some to the background, an area under his chin, hair to his forehead. There are a few very small areas of retouching to the face but the face generally appears to be in good condition as do his clothing. There is a very small area of scratching to the left of the lower part of his cravat.

Area of repainting at right abutting inner slip at approx. 4 o'clock (in line with lower part of shoulder), a few small scattered areas of retouching to paint. Some all over craquelure and some lifting to paint, particularly around damaged areas.

Catch works well and cover is tightly seated.  Some typical very light scattered scratching to the back of the case.  The silvery metal and mesh fob appears to be in good condition.

Sarah Biffin (1784-1850) - Miniature - Portrait of "Aunt Ames, Music Teacher", inscribed "Painted by Miss Biffin without hands. 1844", 9ins x 7ins, in early rosewood frame, with gilt slip and glazed Provenance: By family descent to the current vendor. The sitter, Aunt Ames, was probably a sister of Lady Codrington. Note: Sarah Biffin was born without arms, hands or feet, but despite this severe disability, taught herself to paint by holding a brush between her teeth. As a young girl she toured the country with a travelling showman who exhibited her as a freak and genius. At the age of around 30 years she was released from her contract to him, and, sponsored by the Earl of Morton, was able to become an independent painter of miniature portraits.
