William Patten Jnr. (died 1843) two oils on canvas, Portraits of Sir Edward Banks and his wife, signed and dated 1837, He She 36 x 28 ins. Sir Edward Banks (1770-1835), Builder. A builder who became the principal contractor of Public Works, Banks established himself in the early 1790s by constructing the Lancaster and Ulverston Canals under the direction of John Rennie, the leading engineer of the time. After moving south in 1801 to build the Surrey Iron Railway, Banks went into partnership with W. J. Jolliffe. Over the next three decades, Banks and Jolliffe were responsible for important bridges, dockyards, lighthouses and prisons, which all contributed to Britain's commercial strength and domestic security. A matching portrait of Banks dated 1835 hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
