* Robert O. Lenkiewicz [1941-2002]- Colour Tone Study. Self Portrait:- oil on board 40.5 x 40.5cm. * Notes. Lenkiewicz was a generous teacher of students of any age with a serious interest in learning to paint academically - a skill that had all but disappeared from art schools. Over the years he had devised a very clear system of instruction which he called: the tone of the tone; the shape of the shape; the colour of the colour. By following its structured exercises the student could gain a basic grounding in being able to render the three-dimensional world on a two dimensional canvas. One of the painting challenges was to produce a self-portrait in which random colours were to be used but their tones, the relative lightness or darkness, should accurately represent what the student saw. Removing the colour from the image example makes clear how Lenkiewicz himself handled shadow and light in this demonstration piece.
