BEN ENWONWU 1951 oil on canvas 81.5 x 46.0cm / 32 x 18in Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu was one of the most influential African artists of the 20th Century. Enwonwu began his formal figurative art training at the Slade, having won a scholarship in 1944. He spent his time at the Slade between London and the Ruskin School, in Oxford, where the Slade had been relocated during the war. Following his diploma he studied a postgraduate degree in anthropology at the University of London In 1944, under a joint Shell Petroleum Company and British Council scholarship, he attended the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London and in 1945, the Ruskin School, Ashmolean, Oxford University where the Slade had been relocated during World War II. In 1947, he received a first class diploma in fine art from the Slade and registered for postgraduate courses in anthropology (with a focus on West African ethnography) at the University of Londo, graduating a year later. Following his training, he worked as an art teacher and professor at a number of schools in Nigeria, being made a Government Art Advisor in 1948. OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE - • BERTRAM NICHOLLS, P.R.B.A., R.O.I. (1883-1974) THE DEVIL'S BRIDGE, KIRKBY LONSDALE, CUMBRIA, signed and dated l.r. Nicholls 1967 oil on board 28.5 x 34.0cm / 111/5 x 142/5in Bertram Nicholls first began his studies in his 20's under the Mancunian portrait artist Reginald Barber, at the Slade. Nicholls rejected the modernism of his generation of students, later remarking that it took a number of years to unlearn the principles he learnt at Art School. It was only after 1904 that Nicholls discovered an affinity for landscapes, painting en plein air, under the mentorship of Frederick Jackson. Combining what he learnt from the older Jackson with his meticulous study of Sir Joshua Reynolds and Richard Wilson, he created the serene, tonal landscapes for which he is known today.
GREVILLE IRWIN, R.B.A. (1893-1947) LIFEGUARDS signed l.r. It is most probable that he served in the Great War, but it was in the inertwar years that his career came into its own. Exhibiting at a number of major venues, his works were indicative of his extensive travels, with depictions of Mevagissey and Polperro in Cornwall, Concarneau in Britanny and Parisian and London scenes. Irwin was especially proficient as a painter of symbolic military events, including many of the major Royal occasions of the 1930's.
