LILLY, William. The World's Catastrophe, or Europe's many mutations until, 1666. The fate of England's Monarchy until its subversion. London: 1647. 4to pp. [vi], 71. With 2 half-page woodcuts and extra illustrated with an uncalled for nineteenth century portrait of William Lilly published after his death. Small burn hole in final leaf with loss of a few letters, otherwise a very good copy in modern full calf. Wing L 2252. Sweeney 2856.1 By far the most exhilarating part of this work is seven pages introduced on the title page as "A whip for Wharton." Sir George Wharton was a rival astrologer and Lilly pretends that this attack on someone he characterizes as this blind asse Wharton", is from the pen of a stranger unknown to him but who has come to his defence: "What fault of Mr Lilly or Mr Booker was it that his predictions failed? …. Thus because Corporall Wharton hath overwhelmed himself in such gross errours in judgement, therefore Mr. Lilly is a whelp, and Mr Booker a barking mungrill as he is pleased to term them". TEMPLE, Sir William. [Diplomat] Letters written by Sir W Temple Bart., and other ministers of state .... containing an account of the most important transactions that passed in Christendom from 1665 to 1672 - London: 1700. Two volumes. 8vo. pp. (1) [xiii], 520 (2), [i], 360. With engraved portrait. A good copy in contemporary red morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt rebacked with the original laid down. Wing T 641. They had been revised by Temple before his death and seen through the press by Jonathan Swift, whose first book it is, preceded in print only by some verses in the Athenian Gazette of 1691. Indeed his first words to appear with in hard covers must be this dedication: "To His Most Sacred Majesty William III. King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. These letters of Sir W Temple having been left to my care, they are most humbly presented to Your Majesty by Your Majesty's most dutiful and obedient servant". To be fair to Swift he does not take undue credit for the publication opening his "Epistle to the Reader" that directly follows with the words: "The collection of the following Letters is owing to the diligence of Mr Thomas Downton, who was one of Sir William's Temple's secretaries, during the whole time wherein they bear date." Singled out for special mention are such major historical events as The War with Holland that began in 1665, the Peace of Breda, the Peace of Aix La Chapelle in the first part while the other part ends with the Second Dutch War of 1672. Swift, who had been Temple's secretary at the time of his dearth, was then appointed domestic chaplain to the earl of Berkeley, one of the Lords Justices. The majority of the translations from French and Latin were executed by Swift who however acknowledged his lack of Spanish. Sweeney 5040 quoting the 1st edition of 1699 which was issued in a single volume. A highly important provenance being Inscribed "Isaac Newton Libris" with a reference in the same hand on the first blank leaf to Jonathan Swift's edition. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
JOSHUA DIGHTON (1831-1908) The Rejected with the Jockey Mr. G. Abington Baird, a portrait of horse and jockey in a racecourse setting Oil on canvas, 59 x 49cm The tempestuous affair between "The Squire" and "The Jersey Lily" provided an endless topic of conversation for high and low society alike as he succeeded H.H.The Prince of Wales as the recipient of the favours of the most celebrated beauty of her day. His educational achievements were meagre even if he did attend Eton and Cambridge. Aged 25 when he won the Derby with Merry Hampton, his passion for riding winners likewise far transcended his interest in mere ownership. It was for that reason that this most reclusive of men - no photograph of him has ever been traced - posed for this one painting only after coming of age. The horse, belonged to Johnny O'Neill, a leading professional gambler, and scored in the 1890 Lincolnshire Handicap. While in that instance Baird could not make the weight, he was the partner of The Rejected in thirteen of his twenty six career wins. For all his ability as a race rider, Baird was an obnoxious character, a drunken bully boy, who used his enormous wealth to buy himself out of trouble. The final act in the drama was played out in the same year in which Dighton completed this picture when Baird (aged 31) died of pneumonia in New Orleans where he was engaged in the promotion of a heavy weight title fight between Jem Hall and Bob Fitzsimons. Lily Langtry, cruising in the Mediterranean aboard his yacht the Whyte Lady, rushed back to London for the reading of the will. On arrival she was told that, contrary to her expectations, she did not figure in the disposal of what remained, just over three quarters of a million pounds, from two original family inheritances, aggregating three million pounds. Provenance: Johnny O'Neill / J J Parkinson (the picture was thrown in as "luck penny" when he bought The Rejected to stand at stud at The Curragh) / Dummons Slocock and by descent; from the estate of Tony Sweeney
GEORGE FRANK MILES (1852-1891) Portrait of Lillie Langtry (The Jersey Lily), half-length, her arms outstretched and wearing a short white dress Oil on canvas, 57 x 41cm Provenance: Acquired by Tony Sweeney from Malcolm Alexander Antiques, Dublin Frank Miles, who died by his own hand in a Bristol asylum. The greatest of all the late Victorian beauties, Lillie shared her affections with a wide variety of suitors from princes to artists. A woman of talent as well as beauty, she published her memoirs; acted on the stage in England and the United States; enjoyed considerable success on the Turf, Merman's 1897 victory being the first occasion that a woman won the Cesarewitch; and is still remembered in America for her improbable achievement as a Californian wine producer. She married Sir Hugo de Bathe, characterised by contemporaries as a baronet of little consequence, later withdrew to the Riviera and died there at Monte Carlo in 1925.
DESMOND SNEE (20th/21st CENTURY) Portrait heads of "Dawn Run" and "Arkle" Oil on board, 23 x 29cm each Signed and inscribed (2) A set of Mrs Charmian D Hill's racing colours inset - These two pictures, painted to Tony Sweeney's commission, are dedicated to the best chasers, male and female, bred in Ireland in the 20th century. In each instance their careers ended prematurely, Arkle's through injury incurred in the King George VI Chase at the 1966 Christmas meeting at Kempton Park; and that of Dawn Run through death on a Summer's day in France. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney

Captioned "H.I.M. The Empress of Austria", it offers an informal portrait of the Empress sitting on a fence in a riding habit. Her visits to Ireland left an enduring legacy conferring international social status in the sport as well as becoming a folkloric character thanks to her fearless exploits in the saddle. Captain William George Middleton - By "T" (Chartran). Captioned "Bay" as he was universally known as "Bay Middleton" and is shown in top hat, hunting pink and boots. Celebrated as the finest huntsman of his generation, he escorted the Empress Elizabeth on her hunting holidays in Ireland at this period. He had acquired much local knowledge when serving in Ireland and put this to good use on his return to serve as A.D.C. to the Lord Lieutenant, Earl Spencer. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney

Detective Inspector John Sweeney of New Scotland Yard John Sweeney, Tony's grandfather, rose to be a senior London police officer. He instigated the Flying Squad (immediately done into cockney slang as Sweeney Todd, Flying Squad). Tony Sweeney was immensely proud that a son of evicted Irish emigrants from Kerry could rise to such a responsible position in Victorian England and then publish his sensational memoirs. Tony commissioned a slip case, designed by Michael Scott, with a gilt printed morocco label, giving details of Sweeney's career, his custody of the Crown Jewels during the postponement of Edward VII's coronation, security for Queen Victoria's visit to Ireland in 1900, and his defence against libel. Mounted under magnifying glasses are two silver commemoration medals of above events. Containing: Detective Inspector John Sweeney At Scotland Yard, 1st Edition, London 1904 and the 2nd Edition which contains the defence against Parmeggiani, cloth covers with design of handcuffs Edited by Frances Richards. "New and enlarged edition" printed by Alexander Moring, who appears to have been in a loose partnership with Grand Richards, London, 1905. 8vo with portrait in a red cloth binding decorated with a pair of handcuffs. The previous year's first edition provoked a libel suit and the supplementary chapter was entitled Parmeggiani v. Sweeney. Luigi Parmeggiani was a major collector of antiques and pictures who resided at I Bedford Square, Bloomsbury where his visitors included on one occasion the Empress Frederick of Germany with John Sweeney acting as bodyguard. According to the author Parmeggiani had been one of the formost figures amongst the anarchists and it was this allegation that prompted the law suit. John Sweeney marshalled his evidence so well though that the plaintiff was in the final instance reduced to claiming that the anarchist also named Luigi Parmeggiani was his brother. After a four day hearing before Mr Justice Ridley and a special jury in the King's Bench Court the plaintiff was awarded damages of one farthing, reminiscent of the outcome of the Whistler v Ruskin case, but had to pay John Sweeney's legal costs. Together with Landsdowne, A Life's Reminiscences of Scotland Yard, London (n.d.) Together with Chief-Inspector Littlechild. The Reminiscences, 2nd Edition, London 1894, decorated cloth with paper label (Littlechild was Sweeney's 'boss' at Scotland Yard) The Author dedicated his book "To possible criminals … those who, having within them the germs of crime, are in constant danger of falling into its dark abyss, and if every such person will purchase a copy, ample remuneration awaits my labour. If the perusal of itsd pages should cause but a small number to 'look before they leap,' my reward will be greater. If one truth stands out more prominently in my experiences than another, it is that 'The way of the transgressor is hard". Littlechild was John Sweeney's boss when the Special Branch came into being but his book by the year 2000 was priced below that of his subordinate and this despite Littlechild himself having played a leading role in the hunt for "Jack The Ripper". Provenance: bookplate of James H Dalton and a note indicating that in 1953 he had presented it to J A de Grolian. Acquired by us from Lathkill Books, Bakewell, Derbyshire. Together with Chief-Inspector Cavabba Scotland Yard, Past and Present, London 1893, half-calf, art nouveau spine (Tony Sweeney says Cavanna is the first detective who acquired a 'personality cult') Together with a collection of five volumes on policing, including Galton F., Finger Prints, London 1892 Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
