John Riley (1646-1691) Portrait of a young gentleman Oil on canvas (oval), 75x63cm If the date '1676' pencilled on the reverse of the stretcher is correct, then this is one of Riley's earliest known works. He succeeded Sir Peter Lely as the most distinctive portraitist of his day, and from 1688 along with Sir Godfrey Kneller, he was Principal Painter to the King
Giambattista Bellucci Robert Whyte of Bennochy, M.D. (1714-1766) Oil on canvas, Signed and dated lower right: Bellucci / Pinxt / 1738, 77x64cm Together with armorial The sitter (whose name is more commonly spelled Whytt) is identified by an old inscription on the reverse of the stretcher. His work on the sympathetic forces of the nervous system makes Whytt an important figure in the history of modern medicine, as one who moved away from the old idea of bodily humours. He studied under Boerhaave in Leiden and became professor of the practice of medicine at Edinburgh in 1747. In 1763 he was elected President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Not much is known about the artist, who worked in both Scotland and Ireland. He was the son and pupil of Antonio Bellucci, a Venetian painter who came to England in 1716. There is a modern (1863) copy of this portrait in the collection of the Royal College of Physicians. For Whytt's importance, see Noga Arikha, Passions and Tempers A History of the Humours, New York, 2007.
English School, 1764 General Robert Melville (1723-1809) Oil on canvas, 76 x 63 cm The sitter, an antiquary as well as a soldier, is identified by an inscription on the reverse of the canvas, which also bears the date '1764', in which year he was acting governor of Grenada and again in 1770 to 1771. This agrees with an apparent age of about forty. He returned to Scotland in 1771. He was credited with inventing the corrinade originally named the melvillade. There is a portrait of Melville as a much older man by Sir Henry Raeburn in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The back of the frame also bears the remains of a London framemarker's label, at 28 Gerrard Street.
George Watson (1767-1837) Dr Alexander Wood (1725-1807) Oil on canvas, 89 x 68.5 cm This famous portrait has been shown in a number of major loan exhibitions, as follows: 'Loan Exhibition of Scottish National Portraits', Edinburgh, 1884 (property of Lord Inglis); 'Scottish National Exhibition', Edinburgh, 1908 (property of A. W. Inglis); Royal Scottish Academy 'Centenary Exhibition', Edinburgh 1926, no. 107; 'Exhibition of Scottish Art', London, Royal Academy, 1939, no. 188 (property of J. I. Balfour-Melville). Wood was born in the port of Leith and baptised in Leith South parish church. He became a highly accomplished surgeon (Walter Scott's parents consulted him on Scott's lameness), known also for his good nature and philanthropy. Dubbed 'lang Sandy Wood' because of his considerable height, Byron describes him thus in a draft of Childe Harold: Oh! for an hour of him who knew no feud The octogenarian chief, the kind old Sandy Wood. He was also a close friend of the poet Robert Burns. The portrait appears to show Wood standing on the golf course at Leith Links, with Berwick Law in the far distance. The painting shows the artist George Watson (first President of the Royal Scottish Academy) at his most 'Raeburnesque'.
Robert Herdman RSA (1829-1886) Portrait of Jane Amelia Wilson, later Mrs Balfour-Melville (died 1890) Oil on canvas. Signed (in monogram, the 'R' reversed) and dated, bottom left: RH 1866, 125.5x90cm Herdman is perhaps better known for his historical and subject pictures, but he was also a superb portraitist as this unique example shows. He trained with Robert Scott Lauder, imbibing the latter's variety of Pre-Raphaelitism. The sitter was the daughter of a Dr Wilson of Florence. She married Balfour-Melville in 1879.
