DUTCH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY A portrait of a gentleman wearing the regalia of the Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw (The Order of the Netherlands Lion), in all probability a member of the van Tuyll van Serooskerken Family, pastel, 33cm x 26cm (oval); together with a similar portrait of a 19th century gentleman with distinctive sideburns, 36.5cm x 29cm (oval) (2)
ASCRIBED TO SIR FRANCIS GRANT (1803-1878) A portrait of Sir Hope Grant depicted standing three-quarter length, in full military dress uniform with sword and hat, oil on canvas, 35cm x 24cm. General Sir James Hope Grant, GCB (22 July 1808 – 7 March 1875) was a British Army officer. He served in the First Opium War, First Anglo-Sikh War, Indian Mutiny of 1857, and Second Opium War. Sir Francis Grant PRA (18 January 1803 – 5 October 1878) was a Scottish portrait painter who painted Queen Victoria and many distinguished British aristocratic and political figures. He also served as President of the Royal Academy. Hope and Francis were brothers, the sons of Francis Grant, Laird of Kilgraston, near Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Provenance: A label verso stating that this painting was "left to Hope Brooke, Boddlington House, Byfield"
PHILIP ALEXIUS DE LASZLO (1869-1937) 'Ernst Louis Leopold Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken, 1904' The sitter depicted half-length seated in an interior, wearing a pale suit and matching hat, signed "Laszlo F.E".and dated lower right, oil on canvas, 92cm x 81.5cm. de Laszlo was introduced to the van Tuyll van Serooskerken Family via the noble van Loon Family in 1903. The following year de Laszlo painted four portraits for Ernst Louis Leopold, Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken (1875-1959) and his wife Henriette, Baroness van Tuyll van Serooskerken-Jochems (1862-1968). Following their marriage in 1902, the couple had settled on the 'Riegersbergen' Estate near the Hague, where this extraordinary portrait was painted. The Artist also produced an impressive companion portrait of Henriette in similar attire, which de Laszlo often borrowed for exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, which gained the young Baroness and wide reputation for her great beauty. Unfortunately, the portrait of Henriette van Tuyll was lost in the Second World War, but two smaller portraits of her have survived, one of which is offered in the following lot. A rare Wedgwood white ware Jubilee pattern teapot and cover c.1810, of octagonal form printed with a portrait medallion of George III and badge and chain of the Order of the Garter, with overpainted flowers on a stippled geranium coloured ground, the handle and spout gilded, the spout is chipped and the underside of the inner rim of the teapot has three chips, there is some general rubbing to the gilding, 24cm longQty: (1)NOTESProvenance: Collection of Jack Webb (1923-2019), London. Sold with a letter to the owner from The Antiques Dealer and Collectors' Guide dated 15 October 1956, in which they identify the teapot as a specimen. The set was executed by royal command and presented to King George III by his family on his jubilee in 1810. The set may have been made under the personal direction of his daughter, Princess Elizabeth, as the princess herself was an artist of talent, studying under Gainsborough. The engraver who carried out the designs for the insignia of the Order of the Garter was John Robinson, whose name is entered in Wedgwood's account books. Sets of Jubilee ware, though made for the royalty, were put on sale in the firm's London showrooms (Country Life, 22 November 1962, refers).
* Goodrich Motor Tires. An original Goodrich Company poster c.1910, colour lithograph on paper, showing a portrait of Marie by Albert Lynch, with copyright 1909 by the B.F. Goodrich Co, Akron, O, U.S.A., vertical closed tear upper right, 77 x 67cm, period carved oak frame, glazedQty: (1)NOTESMarie was one of the 17 "Goodrich Girls". The Goodrich Girl series was given to customers as Christmas promotional gifts in various forms including advertisements, calendars, postcards and other items.
Mary Wondrausch large slipware cider or wine flagon with wooden tap for 'The Silver Jubilee 1952-1977', decorated on one side with lion and unicorn and the other with stylised portrait of the queen holding orb and sceptre and labelled 'ER', monogrammed MW and 'Wharf Pottery' below handle, h40cm, along with two books by Mary Wondrausch on Slipware, inscribed and signed by the author. Overall condition good. Some crazing, no damage found.
African art Portrait mask, BauleIvory Coast. . Cm 22,00 x 33,00. Wooden mask in dark patina with elegant features. This mask belongs to the Baule tradition of the so-called portrait masks used during the dances of the Mblo celebrations. An idealized female face is here represented with various symmetrical scarifications and the mouth open in a circle.Provenance: Italian private collection, acquired in the early '70s from a historical French collection formed around the 40s of the last century.
