Oliver Cromwell Original Art – original oil study on copper, showing a 17th c figure half length in armour, looking seriously to his left, framed. A good copy of Danzig-born Loggan`s second major work, following on from Oxonia Illustrata (1675). The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, 9 vols., 1st ed., York and London, 1760-1767, with Sterne`s signature in ink in vols. 5, 7 and 9 as called-for, eng. frontis. in vol. 4 (often found incorrectly placed in vol. 3), half-titles present in vols. 4 and 9 (vols. 5 and 6 with half-titles discarded), vol. 1 with E5 printed black on both sides, vol. 3 with the inserted marbled leaf between L4 and L5, vol. 4 with L2r left blank for the reader`s imaginary portrait of the Widow Wadman, vol. 5 without initial blank, armorial bookplate of Robert Goelet loosely inserted in first vol. (faint adhesive mark on front pastedowns from a previous bookplate), blue endpapers, a.e.g., late 19th c. mottled calf by Riviere, with his ink stamp on verso of front free endpapers, extrems. rubbed, gilt rule decorated raised bands between hound`s tooth rolls, gilt lettered labels in second and third compartments, remainder with central flower tool surrounded by stars and flowers, with volute cornerpieces, date lettered direct at foot, covers with gilt double fillet border, gilt single fillet on edges, gilt dec. turn-ins, sm. 8vo, housed together in custom-made partitioned book box. Imprints correspond to Rothschild 1970. Volume 1 is the correct first York printing (i.e. without the footnote on p.134); volume 2 bears the correct York printed title-page but some of the text appears to be taken from the London edition (i.e. the title-page is A1; in the York issue it is printed as part of gathering M). Volumes 3 to 9 are all first edition, first issue (volumes 7 and 8 are the true first edition, not the concealed second edition). (9)
ChŽron (Elisabeth Sophie, 1648-1711). A bound collection of 35 engraved plates of classical scenes and figures after ChŽron, c.1720, with a portrait frontispiece of ChŽron and 35 plates engraved by H. Simon Tomlinson, C. Simonneau, J. de la Croix and B. Picart, some bearing imprints dated between 1710-17, all plates with engraved titles in French, four plates trimmed (three subsequently relaid), sheet size 335 x 238 mm, 19th century half morocco, covers detached, folio. Extremely scarce. The British Library have a similar bound set of 48 plates. Elisabeth Sophie ChŽron was only the fourth woman to be admitted to the Acadamie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture at the age of just 22. She was also recognised in her own time as a gifted poet and musician but is celebrated today an an influential trialblazer for women artists of the 17th and 18th century. (1)
