TWO ENGLISH PORCELAIN ARMORIAL SOUP PLATES, c.1820, one with monochrome swan in chains below the motto "Fides in Amicitia" within a bright green, burnt orange, pink and gilt stiff leaf border, the other with a boy's head and shoulders portrait with an asp around his neck in colours within a gilt border, both unmarked, 9 1/2" diameter, a porcelain cup and saucer bat printed after Buck and overpainted in colours with a mother and child and a Staffordshire porcelain teabowl and saucer painted with puce and green bands (6)
A cast circular bronze commemorative plaque of J N Cabirol:, head and shoulders portrait in relief inscribed 'J N Cabirol Inventeur du Sophandre', 44cm diameter. *Note- Joseph- Martin Cabirol (1790-1874) was a French inventor who patented a standard diving dress in 1855 based upon the Augustus Siebe design. He is credited with adding the additional top window to diving helmets. * see page 208, vol 2, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

†AUGUSTUS EDWIN JOHN, OM, RA (1878-1961) PORTRAIT OF JACOB EPSTEIN signed, pencil, 20 x 15.5cm Executed in 1905-6. Provenance: Mr Samuels, Liverpool; J Leger & Son, London, March 1944; acquired then or afterwards by the late grandfather of the present vendor. Illustrated: Silber (E, et al ), Jacob Epstein Sculpture and Drawings Exhibition Catalogue, Leeds City Art Galleries and Whitechapel Art Gallery London, 1987, fig 42 (as "whereabouts unknown"). Exhibited: Sheffield City Art Galleries, April - May 1970, Catalogue No 36. This marvellous newly rediscovered drawing of the head of his friend by Augustus John dates from very soon after he and Epstein first became acquainted. In 1905 Epstein left Paris and settled in London where he immediately became involved with the other young Bohemian artists and their wider circle. John made two etchings of the head of Epstein in 1906/7, and another drawing only slightly larger than the present work, that was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in 1957. ++A superb drawing in fine condition, in the original 1940s or earlier frame as when purchased from the Leger Gallery. "Rosamund's" seventeen foals included "Barefoot". "Rosamund" died in 1829. ++Unlined on the original stretchers. Canvas holed extreme right, craqueleur and old localised overpainting. In what is almost certainly the original early 19th c giltwood cavetto frame

The horse was sired by "Son & Heir" out of "Dyonisia". The horse won the Foxhall Stakes at Goodwood in 1934, the Birmingham Stakes in 1939 and the Lingfield Handicap in 1935. ++In superb preservation undisturbed in the original frame. ENGLISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A JUDGE TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS SIR WILLIAM DOLBEN seated three quarter length in scarlet robes by a sculpture of Justice in a niche to his left, oil on canvas, 125 x 100cm, in gilt panel frame Sir William Dolben (c1627-1694) a Justice of the King's Bench was called to the Bar in 1655. He was appointed Recorder of London in 1676 and knighted the following year. After the Popish Plot (1678-1681) he tried many of the accused, subsequently incurred the displeasure of Charles II through his opposition to the King's removal of the City Corporation's Writs, and was dismissed in 1683. There is a portrait of Dolben by Henry Tilson in Guildhall Art Gallery. ++Old restoration and much old ingrained dirt, the medium uneven and retouched in various passages, lined many years ago on old pine stretchers in 18th c giltwood and composition frame
