First edition, 2 parts in 1 vol., 4to., engraved portrait frontispiece of Magellan, with 5 folding maps and 5 tables, contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, head, tail and edges rubbed, marginal tear in the map following p 159 (no loss), bookplate of Charles Crofton-Atkins Note: An account of Don Antonio de Córdoba's scientific and hydrographic survey of the Strait of Magellan, 1785-86, 1788-89, compiled by José de Vargas Y Ponce, Spanish geographer and naval officer, mainly from the journals of Córdoba's lieutenants, Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Alejandro Belmonte. The expedition was appointed by the Spanish Crown to determine the exact navigability of the strait and the advisability of the Spaniards continuing to use the passage in voyages to the Pacific or whether it was preferable to enter the Pacific by way of Cape Horn., as well as to investigate the plant and animal life of the region, with a view toward colonisation.

GERARD SOEST (c. 1600-1681) A bust-length portrait of Thomas Geers, Sarjeant-at-Law, signed 'Soest pinxit' lower left, oil on canvas, 73cm x 60cm (oval) Thomas Geers (c. 1643-1700) was Sarjeant-at-Law and Deputy Steward of Hereford. Geers was elected as a court supporter to James II's Parliament. He was moderately active, with six committees, of which the most important was on the bill for the general naturalization of Huguenot refugees. Presumably the King was satisfied with his conduct, for he was raised to the coif in 1686

Lockyer is credited with the discovery of helium (With Pierre Janssen) and was the first editor of 'Nature' journal; Dr. Lyon Playfair (1st Baron Playfair), written request for a book from Messers Williams and Norgate with a period separate photograph and facsimile signature; William Pengelly, signed letter; Sir David Brewster with request for books dated 1866 with a portrait print separately; verso an a letter from Michael Arthur Bass, 1st Baron Burton. Edward John Routh, signed letter.
