The expedition was appointed by the Spanish Crown to determine the exact navigability of the strait and the advisability of the Spaniards continuing to use the passage in voyages to the Pacific or whether it was preferable to enter the Pacific by way of Cape Horn., as well as to investigate the plant and animal life of the region, with a view toward colonisation.

GERARD SOEST (c. 1600-1681) A bust-length portrait of Thomas Geers, Sarjeant-at-Law, signed 'Soest pinxit' lower left, oil on canvas, 73cm x 60cm (oval) Thomas Geers (c. 1643-1700) was Sarjeant-at-Law and Deputy Steward of Hereford. Geers was elected as a court supporter to James II's Parliament. He was moderately active, with six committees, of which the most important was on the bill for the general naturalization of Huguenot refugees. Presumably the King was satisfied with his conduct, for he was raised to the coif in 1686
