High-grade archival paper. Printed to the edge of the sheet. Fine, quality printing. Very good to fine condition. Comment(s): According to “Gordon’s Photography Prices” the auction record for a silver print of this image is $511,500 realized at Christie's, New York, 4/6/2017, lot #12. This edition authorized and supervised by Doon Arbus. Diane Arbus’s direct, confrontational approach to photography meant that her subjects did not always like their portraits. After seeing his, the writer Norman Mailer famously said, "giving a camera to Diane Arbus is like putting a live grenade in the hands of a child". Here the grenade is just a toy, yet Arbus again makes an unconventional portrait of her subject. On the contact sheet, it is evident that Arbus did make ‘typical’ portraits of the boy smiling, but she chose to print only this unusual shot. He stands stiffly, his hands clenched like claws, with a crazed expression on his face. The portrait seems sinister, yet it could reflect something more ordinary – the exasperation of any child made to stand still and have his picture taken (courtesy National Gallery of Scotland). MANNER OF FRANCOIS CLOUET (c.1510-1572) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, POSSIBLY MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS Oil on panel, tondo, probably 19th Century 18cm. diam.; with a 19th Century (Dutch?) oil on panel, portrait study of a smiling man, framed as an oval, 16 x 13.5cm. (2) * The principal item is similar to a watercolour of Mary Queen of Scots by Clouet, c.1558 (Royal Collection) ++ Former items split at lower border, some craquelure, a little retouching; the latter item very dark, dirty varnish, fair
FOLLOWER OF MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (1561-1635) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, WITH A CHILD Each standing full length, she wearing a silver-grey dress with a lace collar and holding gloves, the child wearing a long red tunic with mustard sleeves, oil on canvas 191 x 125cm. * This composition compares, in part, with a portrait of Anne, Lady Hope (nee Hopton) with her three children (Thomas, Henry and Jane), by Gheeraerts, 1596, (204 x 122cm) (London, National Gallery, lent from a private collection). The present composition was formerly identified as a portrait of Anne of Denmark (1574-1619). Provenance: By descent in the family of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick (1783-1848), Goodrich Court, Herefordshire; bears inscription Purchased from the Meyrick Collection 1872 on the stretcher
AFTER ANTHONIS MOR (c.1516/9-1576/7) PORTRAIT OF PHILIP II OF SPAIN (1527-1598), CONSORT OF QUEEN MARY TUDOR Standing, full length, wearing armour and holding a marshal's baton, bears inscription philippe 2 Reÿ de Spañia lower left, oil on canvas 198 x 118.5cm. * A later copy, probably 18th Century, after the prime version by Mor, painted in c.1557, (Monasterio de San Lorenzo, El Escorial). Mor worked at the Court of Charles V and of Philip II in the Spanish Netherlands. Inspired by Italian Mannerists, he blended an acute study of likeness with meticulous technique and a glorification of the grandeur of his sitters. There is often a sense of quiet, sometimes almost severe, authority in his work. His pupil Alonso Sanchez Coello (1532-1588) worked closely in Mor's style and his own version of this subject, dated 1566, is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (now on loan to Schloss Ambras, Innsbruck). Another version from the workshop of Mor, on panel, is to be found in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Philip II is shown in the cuirass of the famous Cruces de Borgoña armour. This is the suit that Philip wore in 1557 at the Battle of Saint Quentin, a major Spanish victory over the French. The stern assertiveness of this imperious, uncompromising image ensured Mor's success. Provenance: By descent in the family of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick (1783-1848), Goodrich Court, Herefordshire; bears inscription Purchased from the Meyrick Collection 1872 on the stretcher
MANNER OF SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641) PORTRAIT OF KING CHARLES I Bust length, wearing a dark slashed doublet, white ruff and blue Garter ribbon, oil on panel 9.7 x 8cm. * Probably 18th Century, derived from a lost original of c.1631 ++ A few minor surface blemishes; needs a light clean
CIRCLE OF MATHER BROWN (1761-1831) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Seated half length, wearing a dark coat, white frilled stock and holding an open book, oil on canvas, gilt frame 74.5 x 62cm Provenance: George Richmond, grandson of George Richmond RA, and thence by descent ++ Lined; some retouching; some craquelure
ATTRIBUTED TO BRITON RIVIERE, RA (1840-1920) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG LADY, PROBABLY MARY ALICE DOBELL (1844-1931), THE ARTIST'S WIFE Bears later inscriptions on stretcher, Selina Williams nee (Dobell) (partially erased) and Alice Dobell/ painted/ by Briton Riviere, oil on canvas, mounted circular 39.5cm. diameter. * Riviere married Alice Dobell in 1867. His works from the 1860s are scarce, even though he showed thirteen works at the Royal Academy during that decade. His preferred subject matter, which already owed a substantial debt to the anthropomorphic and sentimental style of Landseer, was in evidence and this `Pre-Raphaelite` subject is atypical. However, the link with the Dobell family is also made through a sibling: Briton's sister, Annette Louise (1837-1887) painted a portrait miniature of Nora Selina Dobell Williams (1841-1924) in 1885. A clear similarity between the sitter in the miniature and this portrait is not apparent. ++ Retouching, particularly on the face
§ Augustus John O.M., R.A. (British 1878-1961) Portrait of a Lady, 1943 signed 'John' and dated (lower left), red and black chalk(49cm x 33cm (19.25in x 13in))Footnote: The style of this portrait drawing is instantly recognisable as belonging to the 1940s, when Augustus John's fame was such that many people wanted to sit for him. Rather than using oil paint, he used red and black chalks, with white chalk for highlights, a medium that he had not used since the first decade of the 20th Century. Many portraits were executed in this way, and as in the present work, his female sitters sat for him wearing classic 1940s hairstyles, and were not always named. Comparable works are reproduced in ‘ Augustus John: 52 Drawings ’ (George Rainbird, 1957), in which the artist insisted that a selection of his recent portrait drawings should be included. We are grateful to Rebecca John for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.
§ Victoria Russell (British 1962-) Theresa, 1996 inscribed to label (to reverse), oil on canvas(202cm x 89.5cm (79.75in x 39.5in))Footnote: Victoria Russell was winner of the National Portrait Gallery BP Portrait Award in 2000 with her portrait of the actress Fiona Shaw. She studied at the Royal Academy Schools, London and Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design and her commissions have included the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, HM Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark and Dame Shirley Williams.
§ Ronald Searle C.B.E. R.D.I. (British 1920-2011) Self Portrait as an Artist signed in pen (lower right), pen and ink on paper(27.5cm x 20.5cm (16.75in x 8in), unframed)Footnote: Provenance: Estate of the artist and by descent. Literature: Part of this self portrait is included on the back cover of Ronald Searle, Back to the Slaughterhouse and Other Ugly Moments, MacDonald & Co., 1951.
