19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL, Portrait of ? Lady Richardson, half length, her hair tied in a bun and reclining on a chaise longue, pencil and watercolour, 8 1/4" x 7"; an engraving of Sir John Richardson after Stephen Pearce, and a further engraving of a lady in 18th century costume wearing a bonnet. (3)
A pair of framed Berlin portrait plaques late 19th century after Balthasar Denner, depicting bust portraits of an elderly couple, the lady signed lower right H. Stadler/ Cop..n B.Denner, the gentleman signed lower right H. Stallman, each in an elaborate gilt frame impressed K.P.M. and sceptre mark and impressed and incised letters and numerals, incised shield marks 54cm., 21.25;in. by 46cm., 18in. overall; the plaques 31.5cm., 12.375;in. by 38.7cm., 15.25;in. (2) Hans Stadler is recorded as a porcelain painter in Vienna during the second half of the 1880s; he participated in exhibitions in 1885 and 1888, when he is reported to have exhibited "portraits on porcelain, genre scenes on porcelain dishes, plates decorated and painted in the old genre" (quoted by W. Neuwirth, Porzellanmaler-Lexicon 1840-1914, vol.II, p.275).
A group of four snuff boxes comprising: a gilt-metal and hardstone snuff box, English, circa 1760, rectangular with cut corners, the lid of agate with mossy inclusions, the sides and base pressed with rocaille, 7.5cm, 2 7/8 in; a gilt-metal portrait box, English, mid 18th century, the lid set with later miniature of a gentleman in 18th century dress, spuriously signed: Dumont, 6cm, 2 1/4 in; a gold-mounted carved shell box, possibly Italian, mid 18th century, 6.8cm, 2 5/8 in; and a silver cartouche-form box, English, circa 1760, the lid set with an agate panel, 5cm, 2in (4)
Two horn snuff boxes, John Obrisset, circa 1712 oval, the first, signed with initials, pressed with a profile portrait of Charles I after the medal by Roettiers, the second with the arms of Sir Francis Drake each 10cm, 4in (2) The subjects on the lids of these two boxes are two of the most popular from Obrisset's oeuvre. The Drake coat of arms, which appears in a number of versions, in particular has been much discussed by P.A.S. Phillips, John Obrisset, London, 1931 and Paula Hardwick, Discovering Horn, Guildford, 1981, among others.
A group of miniatures, the majority Continental, 19th century comprising: a portrait of a lady in red velvet, signed: Frapie; a genre scene titled: Les Fumeurs and signed: Seger; most painted on ivory or vellum, one enamel, one on wood, one of porcelain, most in gilt-metal or ivory frames (16)
