Agnes Nicholl, a bust portrait of Miss Floris Hedgcock, watercolour, signed, inscribed and dated 1884 on a label verso, 37 x 26 cm See illustration Condition report Report by RB In pretty good original condition, although the paper is slightly warped, probably in its original frame, with slight loss to the bead border and chipping to the corners of the frame, possibly also see Lot 512, by the same artist. Provenance: a distant family relation to the vendor.
Attributed to Nathaniel Hone, a portrait of Thomas Skinner II, oil on canvas, oval, 57.5 x 44 cm See illustration Condition report Report by RB Provenance: Descent through the family. Cleaned and relined at some point, some crazing, the frame with some loss to the bead moulding. With a typed label: Thomas Skinner II was the god-father and cousin of David Robert Michel. Nicholas Skinner his grand-father, a Merchant of London, bought the Dewlish estate together with the Livings of Milborne St Andrew and Dewlish from John Baskell in 1663, in 1702 he built Dewlish House, his son Thomas I married Grace Bingham of Melcome Bingham (a sister of Penelope who had married John Michel of Kingston Russell, the grand-father of David Robert Michel). This portrait is of their son Thomas Skinner II who married Barbara Opie and died childless in 1756 leaving Dewlish to David Robert Michel and his other estate to his nephew, the son of Grace Skinner Duckett.
CHRISTINA ROBERTSON (1796-1854) Portrait, probably of Grand Duchess Olga of Russia (1822-1892), seated half length at a window, wearing a silk dress and a bead necklace with cross pendant, flowers at her corsage, pencil and watercolour heightened with body colour, signed and dated 1846 left centre, 25 x 20cms.
