Attributed to George Frederick Watts RA RBA RP HROI 1817-1904- Portrait of a lady in profile, head and shoulders; pencil and black chalk with touches of white and coloured chalk on grey paper, 18.5x13cm: together with one other portrait study of a lady, in black and coloured chalk on grey paper attributed to the same hand, 21.5x15.5cm.: B J Leigh, British Colonial School, mid 19th century- "On The Ganges"; watercolour, signed, bears inscription on the reverse of the frame, 12x14cm., (3)
English School, late 18th century- Portrait of a Sergeant in King George III Coldstream Regiment of the Footguards standing full-length turned to the right in a landscape, 50.8x40.5cm Note: This military figure can be narrowed down to a Sergeant in King George III`s Coldstream regiment of the footguards, most likely a Sergeant of the Battalion Company 1792. He wears a red regimental coat with dark blue facings, symbolizing the Royal regiment, it may be a full dress version with a stand up collar with blue and gold lace edge. The gilt button loops in pairs on the lapel signify he is a member of the Coldstream and the gilt epaulettes are a sign that he is in a Battalion Company. Under the coat a black stock and white frill shows. A sword belt hangs on the left with an oval belt plate and there is a crimson sash round his waist with fringing on the left side. His hat is plain black with stiffeners in the front and back, the Infantry regiments still had white lacing around the edge of their hats but from 1790 the guards had black silk edging, as evident in the painting. They had a white plumb with black tip and black silk cockade at base. His hair is powdered, which was practise up until 1795, and tied in a black silk ribbon. (VW)

"Young Stan": A carte de visite studio portrait of Stan Laurel in childhood, by Thorne & Co, 2 Spencer Street, North Shields, 4 1/4 x 6 1/2in. (10.5 x 16.5cms). NB: Titled "Young Stan" in pen to verso, but written over pencil inscription "Stanley", the number "6" circled also appears. Another inscription (or perhaps an address) has been scratched out). Stan wears clothes that could well have been the inspiration for Babe`s costume in their film "Brats" released in 1930.
J*** Hodgson Campbell (1855-1927) A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST HENRY HETHERINGTON EMMERSON signed and inscribed "Life class study of the President"; inscribed "To Aaron Watson Esq. from the painter" and dated 1896 verso oil on canvas 55 x 37cms; 21 3/4 x 14 1/4in. NB: H.H. Emmerson (1831-1895) was one of Northumbrias outstanding artists of the 19th Century. He was the first President of the Bewick Club and served in this capacity until his death. Aaron Watson (1850-1926) was a journalist and amateur painter and proprietor of the Newcastle Critic. During some twenty-eight years on Tyneside, he was also connected with the Daily Chronicle, edited the Shields Gazette, and finally the Newcastle Daily Leader, he was friends with several prominent local artists and both he and Campbell were staunch members of the Pen & Palette Club in Newcastle.
F*** Hünten (German 19th Century) A PORTRAIT OF THE SNOW-RIGGED BRIG CASSANDRA UNDER CAPTAIN JOHN SWALES signed, inscribed and dated 1860 oil on canvas 41.6 x 62.8cms; 16 1/2 x 24 3/4in. NB: This rare and little-known ship portraitist is thought to be of German Nationality working in the third quarter of the 19th Century. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich has a painting by him of the schooner Mystery off Heligoland in 1856.
