His plans of Paris, Versailles, and the surroundings of the city, earned him the position "de géographe de la ville de Paris". The present wall map took two years to complete following direct observation rather than copying of others' work, and was said to be the the first plan of Paris offered to the public for subscription. An engraved facsimile was produced after the map and published in 1880.Rare at auction. We cannot trace another copy being sold in the last 20 years. Other examples are held in the British Library as well as a rather worn copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

AN ENGRAVED CYCLE CLUB FACET STEM WINE GLASS FOR PHILIP EGERTONCirca 1770The drawn ogee bowl inscribed P.Egerton in copper-wheel and diamond-point, the base cut with petal flutes over hexagonal facets and a conical foot, 14.5cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceRobert H. Vaughan (1723-91), Nannau, and thence by descentTamlyns Auctioneers, Bridgewater, 9 December 2008, lot 21Bonhams sale, 16 December 2009, lot 110, where acquired by Peter LoleThe Peter Lole CollectionPossibly for Philip Egerton (1694-1776).THE CYCLE CLUB GLASSESNotesThe present lot comes from a group of thirteen important wine glasses used by members of the Cycle Club which have descended from the Vaughan family of Nannau in North Wales (see P.Lole, 'Limpid Reflections', Glass Circle News, no.118, March 2009, pp.7-8). With its members' close political support of the Stuart cause, the Cycle Club is strongly associated with Jacobite glass. Each of the wine glasses bears the name of a member of the Cycle, including that of the arch-Jacobite Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, recorded in the twenty-six meetings held by a separate host from 2 July 1770 until 8 July 1772 of which 26 people were present. Twelve of the names on the set of thirteen glasses are featured on a contemporary card rota with the owner of the glasses, Robert H. Vaughan acting as host on 24 June 1771. The thirteenth inscribed glass for Philip Egerton of Oulton (1694-1776), does not feature on the rota, but as by far the oldest member - he would have been 76 at the commencement of this Cycle - he was presumably excused from hosting a meeting.Four of the glasses are now in the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. The set included glasses for Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (1748-89; President of the Cycle); Hon. R. Barry (1719-87); Hon. I.S. Barry (1725-84); T. Bycot (d.1798); P. Davies; R.P. Price (1736-82); B. Read; R.P. Thelwall (1720-75); W. Williams (d.1808); Dr. Wynn (?1745-96?); O. Wynne (1742-82); P. Egerton of Oulton (1694-1776). Hartshorne (1897) records that at Oulton there survived a set of ten Jacobite glasses of circa 1750, which were used at Cycle meetings together with a tabernacle portrait of Prince Charles by Giles Hussey. Unfortunately, Oulton Park was burned down in a disastrous fire in the 1920s, and the glasses may not have been saved. It has been suggested that some Clubs, and the Cycle in particular, had duplicate sets of glasses at different venues, and this discovery of a set of Cycle glasses at the Vaughans of Nannau seems to confirm this belief.Further evidence to support this proposition may perhaps be observed in the two group portraits painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds of The Society of Dilettanti, dating from 1778-79, now hanging in Brooks' Club in London. Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, Bart, can be seen on the extreme left-hand side of one of the paintings (illustrated) whom along with fellow members of the Dilettanti, including Sir William Hamilton, are clearly holding facet-stem wine glasses of the type used by the Cycle. Unfortunately, the Dilettanti glasses do not appear to be inscribed. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An early 20th century Continental 14 carat gold chainmail and sapphire evening bag with purse attachedframe stamped 585, also incuse numbered 45670 The square shaped bag with tapered sapphire cabochon mounted gold snap clasp, the rigid shaped frame channel set with calibre-cut sapphires, attached to a gold chainmail suede-lined bag, hung from a chain handle of uniform oval links, a suspended gold and sapphire purse attached of similar design, plus two hanging charm pendants, the discs decorated with a pig and engraved 'Viel Gluck' (translates to 'Much Luck') and a chimney sweep engraved 'Leon', the interior bag frame to one side engraved 'Leon, Neujahr 1912', to the other 'Antonie Schulz', length bag 15cm, weight total 388.8gms.Footnotes:This gold handbag and purse was a gift from Doctor Leon Lilienfeld (1869-1938) to his future wife Antonie Schulz (1876-1972), in the New Year of 1912. The inscriptions are from Leon to Antonie Schulz, who later became Antonie (Schulz) Lilienfeld.Leon Lilienfeld was born Joseph Leib Leon Lilienfeld to a Jewish family in Podhajce, near L'vov in South Eastern Poland (now the Ukraine), in 1869. Dr Lilienfeld was trained as a physician, but went on to become an eminent scientist and inventor. In his scientific career he produced new derivatives of cellulose and became world-renowned for his inventions, obtaining patents both in Austria and the United States. Leon's wife Antonie Schulz was born in Czechoslovakia in 1876, into a Christian household. As such, Dr Lilienfeld was baptised on April 27th 1914 at the age of 45 and shortly after the couple married, choosing to reside in an affluent area of Vienna. With his wealth, Dr Lilienfeld built a significant collection of Dutch and Flemish old master paintings. The Austrian art historian Gustav Glück published a catalogue of the Lilienfeld pictures in 1917, the 'Portrait of a Man' by Frans Hals serving as the frontispiece to the publication and securing its place as the highlight of the collection. The Lilienfeld's paintings were so well known that they were widely considered a contribution to the cultural holdings of Austria. As early as 1933, the couple apparently planned to relocate to France, as the German art periodical Pantheon reported: An important private collection, which includes a number of most excellent works by the Dutch Masters, such as the 'Portrait of a Man' by Frans Hals ... will be lost to Vienna's art collections in the near future, when the owner, Dr Leon Lilienfeld, moves to Paris. For what reason they planned to relocate to Paris at this time is not known, but they did not leave Austria until shortly after the Anschluss, on March 24, 1938, fleeing to Milan. The couple provided several reasons for their departure, but the most likely explanation was that, because he would be considered Jewish under the Nazi race laws, he did not wish to stay within the borders of what had become part of the Third Reich. Thus the Lilienfeld's had to leave their home and their belongings, including the art collection, in Austria. Tragically Dr Lilienfeld died of pneumonia in Milan on June 6, 1938, leaving his widow as his sole heir. Between leaving Vienna and her husband's demise, the Nazi Decree Regarding the Declaration of Jewish Assets went into effect on April 26, 1938. This law required any Jewish resident of the Reich possessing at least RM 5000 in property to submit an itemised asset registration with the Vermögensverkehrstelle (VVSt), or Property Registration Office within the Ministry of Economics. By 1941 Antonie Lilienfeld had settled in the USA, in the Boston suburb of Winchester, Massachusetts and that was when her battle began with the art collecting officials of the Third Reich, including Adolf Hitler's own agents, to be reunited with her paintings. The story of the Lilienfeld's demonstrates the many ways in which the Nazi regime sought to strip emigrants of their belongings, and in particular desirable works of art.LiteratureReed, Victoria, 'Frans Hals, Hitler, and the Lilienfeld Collection: A Case Study of Expropriation in Austria', published in the Journal of the History of Collections 30(3):pp 471-486 (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, November 2018)For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
