Sir William Blake Richmond, RA (British, 1842-1921)Umbrian landscape signed with initials 'W.B.R' (lower left)oil on board38.4 x 62.2cm (15 1/8 x 24 1/2in).Footnotes:Sir William Blake Richmond is best known for his portrait work and decorative mosaics in St Paul's Cathedral in London, however, he was also a sculptor and a designer of stained glass and mosaics. Whilst Richmond's reputation as a landscape painter might be less well known, one of his favourite pastimes was travelling and exploring new places. In the 1880s he spent a few months each year abroad in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Egypt. He most enjoyed absorbing the history and mythology of these places and documenting what he saw with numerous drawings and coloured sketches.Lots 107 and 108 are fine examples of works by Richmond and both are believed to be the Plains of Umbria in Assisi. He was said to have been struck by the beauty of the Italian landscape. Richmond evidently took inspiration from Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), President of the Royal Academy from 1878. Like Richmond, Leighton was less well known for his landscapes, however, he too painted them with similar lyrical atmospheric effects, notably an elongated horizontal format with a panoramic arrangement of plains, and often a high horizon.Richmond painted until the end of his life and exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery and the New Gallery, the Fine Art Society, and various British provincial galleries. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
