Jenny Saville, b. 1970, UNTITLED (PORTRAIT), signed and dated '90, oil on canvas, 74x51cm.; 29x20in. This early portrait from 1990 of the artist's classmate exemplifies Saville's use of the traditional in terms of subject and medium. Although this may appear to have been an unconventional choice, considering its connotations with classical male portrait painters and sitters, it provided an electric juxtaposition for Saville's feminist-based subject matter and intense psychological exploration of her sitters. The subject is portrayed here without frills or fancy but with a powerful presence that fills most of the canvas plane, expressed most startlingly through her stance and posture as well as the artist's vigorous brushwork. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner in 1990
Claes Oldenburg, b. 1929, KASPER, PORTRAIT OF W. KoNIG, titled, ballpoint pen and rubber ink stamps on paper, 29.5x21cm.; 11.5x8.25in. Provenance: Collection of Professor Walter Konig, Cologne. Private Collection, Munich. Derived from the profile of an old film poster (the lens being the nose and the reels the ears), the mouse has become synonymous with Oldenburg's work from the early 1960s, most recognisably being used as a letterhead symbol for his first retrospective in 1966 at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, as well as acting as the logo advertising for his 1969 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Having a rather substantial population of mice in his New Haven home, the artist found that "a rodent subject was unavoidable", and following a visit to Los Angeles' Disney World in 1968, Oldenburg began to rework his mouse imagery, proving his originality and flexibility to generate a number of concepts based on a single subject. Often likened to a three-way plug, a double light switch or even the artist's face, Oldenburg's mouse captures the artist's sense of humour as well as aptly displaying his ability to transform mundane surroundings into something inspiring and enjoyable.
