Early 19th century oil on canvas, portrait of a gentleman, unsigned, 30" x 25", framed Good condition, relined and varnished approx 30 years ago, a few very small paint flakes on left-hand edge, no signs of previous tears or overpainting, light craquelure but paint is stable, some areas of wear in top right-hand corner, modern frame in good condition.

Second edition, small 4to, comprising part 1 (of 2) only, engraved portrait, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, 3 folding engraved plates, errata leaf, contemporary vellum, some manuscript notes in an early hand, a little light browning, a few internal ink marks, one plate torn with some loss, closed tear to another, a little marginal dampstaining towards the rearFootnote: Note: Latini was an assistant cook, waiter, wardrobe attendant and finally steward of Cardinal Antonio Barberini, before relocating to Naples to become steward for Don Stefano Carillo Salcedo, first minister to the Spanish viceroy of Naples. Latini's famous cookery book contains the earliest surviving recipe for tomato sauce - tomatoes having hitherto been used predominantly as table decorations.
