In a fine carved and gilded frame
The ( translated ) inscription on the canvas reverse suggesting the sitter to be ' Queen Mary of Spain, daughter of King Henry V111 of England ', appears to be an incorrect identification
This portrait appears to be based (with minor variations ) on the Portrait by Velasquez depicting Isabella of Bourbon.(1602-1644) The prime version is in the Prado Museum, Madrid and other variants are known
Provenance: According to a label attached to the stretcher this picture is said to have been brought back to England after the Peninsular War by Colonel Edward Howorth, KCB. KH. (Royal Horse Artillery). Howorth whilst serving in the Peninsula was Brigadier General commanding the Artillery at the battles of Talavera, Busaco and Fuentes D'Onor;
