BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, Charles II, Sir Samuel Morland, Silver Medal, 1681, by John Roettier, laureate bust of Charles II with flowing hair, rev legend IN ADVERSIS SVMMO VITAE PERICVLO IN PROPERIS FELICI INGENIO FREQVENS ADFVIT, lettered edge, SAMVEL MORLANDVS EQ QVR ET BAR, 33mm (MI I 582/257). Darkly toned, very fine with MI number 257 stuck to the reverse. Sir Samuel Morland (1625-1695), diplomatist, mathematician and inventor. The medals are said to have been struck by Morland after his appointment as ‘Master of Mechanics’, and were dedicated to the King. In old age he went blind and invented a machine for writing, and a mechanical calendar of sorts, as well as a pumping system to water his garden. bought Spink, April 1908, and believed ex Helen Farquhar Collection (whose habit it was to stick numbers on gummed paper onto her medals).

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, James II, The Landing of William of Orange at Torbay, Silver Medal, 1688, by R Arondeaux, William as Roman Emperor tramples on serpent of discord and joins hands with Britannia, rev boats landing at a fortified harbour, CONTRA INFANTEM PERDITIONIS, 49mm (MI I 639/65; Woolf 3:8). Extremely fine, toned and rare. One reading of this protestant medal is that William of Orange comes to England to restore liberties lost to James, Prince of Wales. Another interpretation is that the medal denounces the Pope, who was at the time widely believed to be the Antichrist, called the Son of Perdition by St Paul.

Light wear to high points, otherwise nearly extremely fine. Princess Clementina Sobieski (1703-1735) was betrothed to Prince James Stuart. George I was averse to the marriage and to please him the Princess was arrested and imprisoned in Innsbrück Castle. Eventually she escaped to Bologna and was married to James, at that time in Spain, by proxy.

Lightly toned, extremely fine. The Club, whose members were the “responsible and opulant neighbouring gentlemen” in Manchester, was founded to commemorate the defeat of the Dissenters in Parliament. The attribution to Lewis Pingo (BHM) is seriously doubted by Eimer.

Both extremely fine. (2) The intended marriage of Charlotte and Prince William never took place as Charlotte broke off the engagement six months after it was announced. Perhaps due to the wrath of her father, she stayed out of the public’s gaze at Cranbourne Lodge Windsor until 1816.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George III, The Bethnal Green Volunteers, Disbanded, Silver Medal, 1814, by P Wyon, inscription within closed wreath, rev Britannia standing on a serpent holding olive branch aloft, 50mm (BHM 833, R3), in original (but damaged) case of issue. Extremely fine, deeply toned and extremely rare. After the Treaty of Paris in 1814 all volunteer corps except the Bank Corps were ordered to disband. The general order took place on 24 June 1814. Lt-Colonel Carrick presented each member of the Bethnal Green Volunteer corps with an example of the present medal.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George III, War of 1812-1815, Upper Canada Preserved, Reward of Merit of the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Toronto, Copper Medal [c.1817], by T Wyon Jr, British Lion and Beaver confront American Eagle across panorama of the St Lawrence, rev PRESENTED BY A GRATEFUL COUNTRY, and within central wreath, FOR MERIT, plain edge, 51mm (Leroux 866; Baldwin’s Coin Auction 47, lot 1355, silver; Ford VII, 410-413). Choice mint state, scarce. It is recorded that 61 gold and 548 silver medals were struck. They were never issued and were melted down in 1840. The present medal shows signs of being a later, perhaps mid-19th century, strike.
