Queen Anne, Pre Union with Scotland (1702-07), Crown, 1703 TERTIO, VIGO below draped bust l., regnal year on edge in words, silver, weight 30g, S.3576, gVF and toned.Footnote: * The most intrepid of stories lay behind the capture of the Vigo treasure as opposed to the other companies or privateers who had their mark placed upon the coins in other reigns. The Battle of Vigo Bay occurred on 23rd October 1702 and it was after the Battle that the treasure largely of silver, with a tiny proportion of gold was captured and transported back to Southampton on the south coast of England. From there the treasure was brought with great pomp and ceremony to London, overseen by the Mint Master himself, one Mr Isaac Newton, to then be turned into coinage at the Royal Mint in the Tower of London. The treasure consisted of absolutely thousands of pounds in weight of silver, but a mere seven pounds and eight ounces of gold. The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Anne by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland" and additionally on the edge "An ornament and a safeguard, in the third year of the reign."
King Edward VI, Crown, 1551, King on horseback with date below horse R. Shield on cross, mm. y (Southwark), fine silver issue, weight 30.8g, S.2478, about VF with dark toning and a strong portrait. The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Edward the Sixth, by the Grace of God, King of England, France and Ireland"; and on the reverse "I have made God my helper," a Psalm from the Bible.Footnote: * King Edward was only 14 when this coin was minted, son of Henry VIII by Jane Seymour, in fact Henry's only son. Henry's obsessive desire for a male heir of course caused the great schism between the Catholic Church and himself, leading to the establishment of the Church of England. Edward's health had been fragile since birth, and the unfortunate lad died of tuberculosis in July 1553. He had no time to make a mark on his world, except perhaps numismatically, for his coins are classic works of Renaissance art, and this, his silver crown, became the very first in a long line of beautifully engraved, emblematic, large silver issues of England and later of Great Britain.
King George II, Crown, 1746 D. NONO, Old laureate and draped bust l. LIMA below R. Crowned cruciform shields, silver, weight 30g, S.3689, gVF and toned.Footnote: * LIMA marked coins were struck from Spanish bullion seized by Captain George Anson under orders from the Admiralty during his trans-global ocean voyage of 1740-1744. When eleven Spanish treasure ships captured off the Philippines were sailed back to Portsmouth and the precious metal delivered to the mint in London, Anson became the most famous admiral of his day. Anson's six warships were at sea for three years and nine months. While his crew were beset by scurvy his squadron of ships endured storms, shipwrecks and furious battles, costing him 5 ships and 1400 of his 1900 personnel. But he captured many prizes of booty, sacked and plundered the town of Payta Bay and sank or damaged a great number of Spanish ships. He captured the long-sought Spanish trading galleon La Nuestra Senora de Cavadonga with a cargo of 36,000 ounces of silver, and some gold. In December 1743 he returned home to England, eventually reached the rank of First Lord of the Admiralty and was elevated to the peerage.
