* Gloster E28/39 prototype W4041/G. A unique and important static presentation model of this first British jet-powered aircraft to fly, built of wood with wartime camouflage upper surfaces, yellow under-wing, national markings, the cockpit hood of black lined silver, on stand and shaped base, black painted with plaque inscribed The Gloster Whittle. The First Jet Propelled Aircraft in the world to fly successfully - May 15th 1941 - Pilot P.E.G. Sayer, O.B.E., 14 in (37 cm) wingspan Constructed under great secrecy, the two prototypes of the E28/39 - W4041 and W4046 were being built at Glosters factory at Hucclecote, the threat of evening action led to the decision to transfer the assembly W4041 to the premises of Regent Motors in Cheltenham. On 7th April 1941 W4041 was removed by road to Hucclecote for initial taxiing trials by P.E.G. Sayer, then Glosters chief test pilot. Sayer made a few hops and Frank Whittle also taxiied W4041. After the initial text, W4041 was taken to Crabtrees garage in Cheltenham for final completion, before being dismantled and re-assembled at R.A.F. Cranwell prior to the first flight preparations. On 15 May 1941 Sayer successfully lifted W4041 off for its momentous first flight which lasted 17 minutes, a day of celebration for Whittle, George Carter (chief designer) and Sayer. W4041 went on to contribute much to jet aircraft design and development and can now been seen in the Science Museum in London. -1
