A pearlware ovoid jug circa 1810-15 each side transfer-printed in black with the pugilists Molineux and Cribb inside silver lustre frames and borders 14cm., 5.5in. Tom Cribb was the foremost pugilist of the day in England. His most celebrated matches were fought against Tom Molineux, a freed slave from Virginia. In 1810 Molineux challenged Cribb for the English championship, a thirty-round bout which Cribb won. The return match took place in 1811, with Cribb easily retaining his title against an overweight Molineux.
A pair of Stevens and Williams silver-mounted engraved 'chianti' decanters and stoppers the silver dated 1892 each globular form with machine threading and cut and engraved with sprays of prunus, above an everted foot, the tall slender neck cut with rosettes against a zig-zag reserve mounted with a double lipped rim, the spire stopper similarly decorated the silver hallmarked for JTH/JTM, Birmingham, 1892 54cm., 21.25in. A silver and enamel timepiece, Ludwig Politzer, Vienna, late 19th century with circular painted enamel dial, the movement inscribed: Gudin Paris, the silver cagework with enamelled pilaster corners, enclosing panels painted with relaxed nudes sporting with plump putti or Jupiter in various avian guises, the finial cast as an owl height 14cm, 5in The firm of Ludwig Politzer was founded in Vienna in 1876 and was an immediate success winning medals and honorable mentions at various international exhibitions. By the time the firm moved to Papagenogasse 4 in 1882, it was employing 40 craftsmen to produce the gold, silver and enamel wares for which they were famed. Politzer was also appointed Court Jeweller to the Shah of Persia. Although retaining the same name, the business was taken over in 1908 by Robert Politzer, perhaps a son.
