Follower of Tiziano Vecellio, Titian, 16th/17th century- Portrait of Venetian Senator, standing three-quarter length, bearded, wearing a dark hat and dark houppelande trimmed with ermine, held with an ornate silver buckled belt, his hand resting on a vellum book; oil on canvas, Note: Overall Stylisticly and compositionally this painting compares with other official Venetian portraits being executed around this time. The confident handling and application of the paint would suggest an influence of Titian, The treatment of 16th century official portraits seemingly expressing a somber austere mood. Facing the viewer directly the influential gaze of the senator engaging the viewer and enforcing the sitters status as the establishment.
