Wreath of immortelles enclosing the Sphinx on ‘Egypt’ tablet; the letters ‘SWB’ across the base. Two original copper loops to reverse. Minor service wear, generally VGC. Wreath of immortelles ordered to be borne on the staff of the Queen’s Colour of both battalions to commemorate the devoted gallantry of Lieutenants Melville and Coghill in saving the Colour from the Zulu enemy after the Battle of Isandhlwana and as her tribute to the gallant Defence of Rorke’s Drift.

Crowned laurel wreath on ‘Tenax et Audax’ tablet’; within the wreath a cycle wheel inscribed ‘County of London Cyclists’ with Ô25’ to central spokes. Reverse impressed ‘S’ for Sterling Silver. Stout loops to reverse. VGC Transferred to Royal Corps of Signals in 1920.

58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot ‘Bell-Topped’ Officer’s shako plate circa 1829-44. A fine and rare gilt example of crowned star pattern mounted with cut silver eight pointed star mounted with a laurel wreath entwined with circular multi part scroll bearing the Regiment’s honours with two further honours in circlet with seeded ‘LVIII’ to centre set on a black cloth ground. Two horizontal loops to reverse. Generally VGC. During the period this plate was worn, the 58th Foot served firstly in Ceylon from 1828-38, the last two years under the command of Lieut.Colonel John Wharton Frith.; then, under the command of Lieut.Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard, it served in New South Wales 1843-45. It became 2nd Bn. Northamptonshire Regt. on Friday 1st July 1881.

Laurel wreath surmounted by a Guelphic Crown a tablet inscribed ‘Bourbon’. Within the wreath a Maltese cross, lions within the angles of the arms of the cross and with balls to the tips of arms. Roped circlet with BRR entwined letters to centre. Retains its original backing plate as well as all four nuts. Four honours to laurel wreath and two honours to each arm of the cross. Five additional separate honours ‘Kirkee’, ‘Meanee’, ‘Abyssinia’, ‘Hyderabad’, ‘Burmah’ as well as a strung bugle pouch badge. All by H&S. hallmarked Birmingham 1889. VGC

Victorian 1st Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers Officer`s Accoutrements. A fine quality set, comprising: waist belt. This of silver lace with crimson silk central line, the circular waist clasp, is the universal pattern. A circlet of laurel leaves with a central panel mounted with a gilt Royal Crest. Complete with sword slings and with red leather backing. .... The pouch belt of matching lace. The pouch of black leather with matching lace edging and to the centre of the flap a silvered curled bugle. The lace remains bright and fresh. Contained in original black velvet lined tin. The lid with engraved name plate ‘A Leslie Wright Esq 1st Derbyshire Rifle Volunteers’. Also with the tailor’s brass tablet of ‘Oliver & Brown Sackville Street’. Near VGC. Captain Albert Leslie Wright of Butterley Hall Derbyshire was commissioned into the 1st RV on the 28th November 1885 and was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1889. He served with F Company and resigned his commission in April 1899.

Royal Wiltshire Militia 19th Century Field Officer’s epaulettes A fine and rare pair of the 1830 box pattern. The silvered crescent on each one supports fine twist wire tassels. The strap is decorated with silver embroidery of acorns and oak leaves and is mounted with a large Bath Star; within the crescent a padded cushion embroidered with an entwined VR Cypher; each retaining silvered regimental button. The base is of red leather with silvered clip stamped with the retailer’s name of John Jones 6 Regent Street. Some age wear, silver toned and some wear to the tassels. John Jones operated with this trade name 1832-1868.

Household Cavalry State Trumpeter’s Ceremonial trumpet banner. A scarce Elizabeth II example. Ground of crimson damask silk with gold and silver embroidery depicting the Royal Arms to centre flanked by two winged angels and the whole encircled by floral inlaid bullion, the Crown flanked by ‘E’ and ‘R’. To each corner is a bullion Union device incorporating the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland the Shamrock of Ireland. The banner is edged with fine gold twisted thread fringe. The bullion and coloured silks remain bright and fresh, some green oxidisation to the d ring fittings, some twist tassels with faint green tinge, not effecting the overall appearance.

Northumberland and Newcastle Volunteer Cavalry Officer’s epaulette. A scarce early epaulette of regimental pattern. Sheffield silver, the strap is made with scales. The crescent supports fine twist wire tassels. Complete with regimental button of entwined initials NNVC, surmounted by a Crown. The reverse is lined with dark blue cloth and retains silk cushion. The scale with age wear, one scale absent, some stitching faults. Northumberland and Newcastle Volunteer Cavalry was raised in 1817. In 1840 the regimental title was changed to Yeomanry Cavalry.

95th Rifles Regimental Surgeons Waterloo Medal, Regimental Merit Medal Pair. A rare combination awarded to Surgeon Joseph Burke MD, regimental surgeon to the Regiment who efforts treating the men during the winter of 1812, resulted in the award of the regimental Silver Merit Medal. Comprising: Waterloo Medal ‘Surgeon J. Burke 1st Batt 95th Regt Foot’, Silver regimental Merit Medal, the obverse engraved with a strung bugle 95 between the strings, title ‘Rifle Brigade’ above. The reverse engraved ‘The gift of the Officers of the Regiment For Merit Jos Burke 1812’. Bears hallmarks for London 1812. Complete with old ribbon and silver buckle. GC Surgeon Joseph Burke MD, army career began when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the Queen’s German Regiment, he later served with the 97th Foot and in June 1809 now qualified as a Surgeon transferred to the 95th Rifles, serving in the Peninsular. His name is mentioned in a number of publications including the History of the Rifle Brigade (Page 430) ‘In the 1st Battalion Records particular mention is made of ‘the indefatigable exertions of Surgeon Burke’. This is believed to refer to his efforts during the winter of 1812, when the Regiment was garrisoned in winter quarters, his hard work and dedication enabled the Regiment to take to the field in 1813 with Six Companies. Remaining with the Regiment he was present at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1828 he was placed on the half pay list and died in Dublin 10 years later on the 16th September 1838, thus being denied the issue of the MGS which was not issued until 1848.

WW1 13th Bn Rifle Brigade Medal, Pair, Silver War Badge and Certificate. A good complete combination awarded to ‘48965 Pte T.J. Swindells Rif Brig’. Comprising: British War Medal, Victory Medal ‘Pte Rif Brig’, Silver War Badge ‘B342659’, Official award certificate confirming the name and number of the Silver War Badge. GC Information supplied by the vendor states, that Rifleman Thomas J Swindells, served with D Company of the 13th Bn. He joined the Battalion in 1918 and was badly wounded at the Battle of Achiet Le Grand, which resulted in him loosing a leg. He survived, being awarded the SWB on the 15th December 1919. He died in 1965

Complete with brass shoulder titles and General Service Corps buttons. Some moth damage. The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal was announced in the London Gazette on the 15th November 1918 ‘For conspicuous gallantry during an attack. He showed the greatest coolness and devotion to duty under very heavy shell fire. Later with a few men, he rounded up thirteen prisoners and four machine guns from an enemy strong point. Throughout the operations he was invaluable to his Company Commander and set a very fine example to all ranks’. Company Sergeant Major Ernest John Smith was born in Somerset, his family moved to Marlow Buckinghamshire and in June 1909 he enlisted into the 3rd Bn of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. At the outbreak of WW1 he held the rank of Corporal and embarked to France on the 26th May 1915, joining the 2nd Bn , he would remain with the Battalion throughout the war on the Western Front.

WW1 11th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment Officer’s Group of Three Medals. Awarded to Second Lieutenant later Lieutenant Colonel Reginald Harold Merryweather. Comprising: 1914/15 Star ‘PS-3026 Pte R.H. Merryweather R.Fus’, British War Medal, Victory Medal ‘2 Lieut R.H. Merryweather’ Mounted as originally worn, with a small quantity of research. Reginald Howard Merryweather was born in London in 1894, in 1912 he emigrated to Canada to start farming and returned to Britain to answer his mother country call in 1914. Enlisted into the Public Schools Bn of the Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France with the Battalion in November 1915 and was selected for a commission, and was appointed a 2Lt in the 11th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment in August 1916. Returning to France he was attached to the 7th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment and on the 3rd November during the attack on the German Zenith Trench he was blown up and buried by a shell. He returned to Blighty suffering from back injuries and shell shock. Passed by the Medical board for home service only he was attached to the Royal Defence Corps 51st DLI at Saffron Walden. Surviving the war he was awarded the Silver War Badge and with his new wife returned to Canada. At the outbreak of WW2 he once again volunteered for service and by the end of the war held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel commanding A-20 Military Training Camp Alberta.
