William), A manuscript journal, relating to the voyages of HMS Torch in the South Seas, 1852-56, folio, with interesting accounts of visits to various islands including Aneiteum Island [Vanuatu], the Isle of Pines, [off New Caledonia], Fiji, Australia, etc., with plans, views and sketches of native villages, vocabulary of natives, reef charts, observations etc., binding worn; with a smaller manuscript book relating to HMS Torch in 1879-80; Six silver spoons, of 3 forms, with Chimmo`s initials and torch emblem to each handle; Gane (D.M.), Tristan da Cunha, 1932, with reference to Lieut. Chimmo, cloth (9), William Chimmo 1828 -1891. Joined the Royal Navy in 1841, becoming lieutenant in 1850, Commander in 1864 and retired Captain in 1873. Served in the China Wars, searched for Sir John Franklin and for Gregory’s expedition to the Torres Straits. Commanding the Seagull he surveyed the Scottish coast and in the Gannet, surveyed Trinidad and Labrador. Also surveyed the Sooloo Islands where he fought with pirates.Heavily involved in the Hydrographic Survey, he wrote papers on deep-sea soundings and was a Fellow of the Linnean; Royal Geographical; Royal Astronomical and Meteorological Societies.
