A fine late 19th century ivory and silver mounted presentation baton, with embossed silver top and band inscribed "Presented to Lieut. A.B Woodcock, Band Master, Pretoria Volunteer Cavalry by the Members of the Band 19.3.96" in fitted case. Provenance: given to John Brice Jenkins (1876-1923) in recognition of his work during the war-whilst serving in France in WWI he raised a Welsh Choral party from the trenches which toured the greater part of the country. It has passed through the family to the current vendor.

An important group of sixteen medals awarded to Major General Henry Temple Devereux Hickman C.B. O.B.E. M.C. of the 34th Punjab Pioneers, Indian Army, comprising the most excellent order of The British Empire (silver gilt, military Britannia type), Military Cross, Edward VII India General Service medal with North West Frontier 1908 bar (34th Sikh Pioneers), 1914 Star with 5th August-22nd November 1914 bar (Mons clasp), 1914-18 medal, War For Civilisation medal with mention in Despatches oak leaf, George VI Indian General Service medal with North West Frontier 1936-37 clasp, George VI India Service medal 1939-1945, 1939-45 medal, Queen Elizabeth II Africa General Service medal with Kenya clasp, 1939-45 Star, George V Coronation and Delhi Durbar medal, King George V Silver Jubilee medal, King George VI Coronation medal, Order of al Rafidain-Military, King Faisal medal. Also the accompanying miniature medals which include the Order of The Bath. Major General Henry Temple Devereux Hickman was born February 1887 in Mian Mir. His father was adjutant to the 34th Punjab Pioneers. His father, Major Devereux Walter Hickman, was killed in action during the Tirah Campaign near Landi Kotal on January 3rd 1898 (see following lot). The Temple Devereux Hickmans came from a distinguished military family; an ancestor Surgeon General William Temple, Indian Army Royal Regiment of Artillery, won the Victoria Cross on 20th November 1863 (a photograph of him is included in this lot). Another relative was Lieutenant General R Temple C.B. Henry Temple Devereux Hickman served for a period of 37 years. His medal group runs from the reign of Edward VII to the present Queen. He attended Sandhurst College in 1905, he joined his late father`s regiment the 34th Punjab Pioneers a year later and in 1908 went with his regiment on the Mohmand Expedition for which he earned the 1908 medal and clasp. General Hickman won the MC during WWI and was mentioned in Despatches several times Accompanying this lot is an extensive archive of Major General Hickman`s distinguished 37 year career with service records, numerous photographs, drawing and caricature, documents relating to his medal awards, newspaper cuttings etc.
A late 18th century percussion cap (converted from flintlock) turn-off pistol with steel barrel, length of barrel 12cm, the walnut butt with silver wire inlay terminating in a grotesque mask butt cap, hallmarked Birmingham 1781, the action marked Bateman, London (af).
A fine quality miquelet-lock pistol, length of barrel 40cm, the lock signed with gold seal with further gold decoration, fully stocked with silver ball trigger and ball butt, also profusely decorated with silver bands and complete with silver covered ramrod, with black niello enamel, geometric designs and calligraphy.

A George IV silver lidded flagon with Collings inscription London 1824, maker William Bateman, the domed lid with shell thumbpiece, over a baluster shaped body with acanthus and stiff leaf decoration, applied Collings armorial and reeded handle with acanthus mounts, on a plain flared foot, the underside bearing the inscription `To William Thomas Collings. BORN 4th Septr. 1823. The gift of his GOD-PARENTS William Collings and Margaret Lukis`, 9in. (23cm.) high.
A silver presentation Desk Pen and Ink Stand London 1899, maker John Grinsell & Sons, the stand with a gadrooned border, central oval box with hinged lid and two cut glass inkwells with silver lids, the box lid inscribed `Presentation to the Seigneur and Dame of Serk by the Inhabitants on the occasion of their Silver Wedding, November 5th 1954`, contained in a dark red faux leather `A. P. Roger` case, the stand 11.5in. (29cm.) wide, total silver weight 28oz.
A rare George III Channel Islands silver shoe buckle maker`s mark PN, struck twice to each side, 18th century, of plain, open oval form, the underside with scratch engraved initials, indistinct, possibly `IAI`, 4in. (10cm.) wide. * This buckle is reputed to have belonged to John Allaire, privateer and Seigneur of Sark.

A 19th century porphyry and silver brooch with history relating to Dr. Lukis and Lihou Island, the rectangular polished Egyptian porphyry stone in a silver floral and acanthus decorated mount, with bar back bearing the engraved inscription, `Relique, trouvee l`An 1838, dans les Ruines de l`Eglise de la Sainte, Ile de Lihou batie A. D. 1114.`, 2.25 x 1.75in. (5.5 x 4.5cm.), together with a typed manuscript copied from `Collectanea Antiqua of Dr. Lukis, Vol. V, p.192`, detailing the history behind the stone, and two Roman coins believed to have been found at the same site. (4) * History describes how this stone was found in the ruins of the church on Lihou Island in 1838, by Dr. Lukis, ".....Near the South Wall we sank a small shaft below the tiles in order to ascertain if any sepulchral remains were deposited in the chapel. During this examination several coins were collected and in removing a tile on the same side of the chancel there appeared at a depth of a foot beneath it a piece of porphyry and the bone of a human toe. Both these appeared to have been placed there for concealment.". The stone was cut into three parts and presented to Dr. Lukis`s three daughters, including Louisa Elizabeth Lukis, wife of the Revd. William Thomas Collings, Seigneur of Sark.
