Afrika - - Album mit über 250 Original-Photographien. Um 1890-1905. Vintages, verschiedene Techniken: Albumin und Silbergelatine. Maße von ca. 6,5 x 6 cm bis 5,5 x 17,5 cm. Folio. Montiert in HLdr. d. Einige Aufnahmen verblasst. Hochinteressante Dokumentation über Ost-Afrika im beginnenden 20. Jh. Africa - Album with over 250 original photographs. Around 1890-1905. Vintages, different techniques: albumen and silver gelatin. Mounted in cont. half leather with gilt fillets on covers and spine, gilt edges (spine renewed, somewhat rubbed and bumped). - With numerous photographs of natives of various tribes (including Shilluk, Shambi, Maasai) and landscapes from Umtali, Inyorka and Salisbury (today's Harare, Zimbabwe), Mombasa, Gulf of Aden, Suez Canal, Taveta and Voi River (Kenya), Kibondo (Tanzania), Rumbek, Khartoum, Gordon College, Omdurman, Melut, Nile ((South) Sudan), among others. Mostly with title in English below the illustration. The album seems to originate from the circle of British gold miners around Captain Henry Francis "Skipper" Hoste (1853-1936) and his three brothers. The group, operating under the name "Hoste Brothers and Biscoe", was active from 1890 onwards in the well-known Hartley Hills goldfield and the Lion Reef gold mine in Zimbabwe, among other places, both pictured here. The album also contains portraits of the Hoste brothers and some of their fellows such as Arthur Eyre and Lord and Lady Henry Paulet. Contains hunting pictures with killed animals (giraffes, elephants, wildebeest). Also included are clippets from illustrated works of the time about the regions depicted. - Album pages partly browned and somewhat stained. Some photographs faded, some rubbed and with traces of wear. Highly interesting documentation about East Africa in the early 20th century.

Einzigartige, ethnographische Dokumentation. - Hinzu zwei Bücher: "Das Wagnis des Fliegenden Paters" und "Der fliegende Pater Paul Schule, Gründer der MIVA". Papua New Guinea - Collection of over 160 original photographs of a mission of the Missionary International Vehicular Association. Around 1935. Vintages, silver gelatin, mostly on Agfa-Lupex. - The photographs originate from a mission of the famous "flying padre" Paul Schulte (1895-1974). The Oblate missionary founded the Missionary International Vehicular Association (MIVA) in 1927 under great resistance from the Church, after his friend Father Otto Fuhrmann had died of pneumonia in Southwest Africa a few years earlier because he could not be transported to a doctor in time. MIVA's goal was and still is to use motorised vehicles in world mission. Schulte himself flew mainly in southern Africa, but was also active among the Inuit in Canada from 1936. He published widely read books about the missions in both regions. After the outbreak of WWII, Schulte had to retreat from Canada to the USA, from where he organised aid shipments to destroyed Germany after the end of the war. He returned to Germany in 1949, but spent his later years in Namibia, where he died in 1974. - The collection is a rich documentation of various tribes in Papua New Guinea, taken during a MIVA mission from 1935 onwards. In one of the pictures, the MIVA machine and its registration can be seen fragmentarily in the background. It is the model L25 of the manufacturer Klemm, which received the Swiss registration number HB-XAL in 1935 and was baptised "St. Paulus", in reference to Father Paul Schulte. The Swiss registration was necessary because Papa New Guinea was under English influence and it was not possible for a German aircraft to enter the country. The plane was taken apart, transported by ship and assembled after its arrival in New Guinea by Willy Schafhausen, a pilot. Schafhausen's account of his work and life with the indigenous people is published in Father Schulte's book "Das Wagnis des Fliegenden Paters" (The Dare of the Flying Father) from the 1950s. There, attacks by the indigenous people on the missionaries travelling through the bush are reported. The introduction of the aeroplane finally brought about a turnaround in the missionary's work. Schafhausen died in Papua New Guinea in 1939 in a plane crash with another aircraft. - Contains a few duplicates. Rolled due to storage. Only very sporadically a little bit stained. Overall in very good and clean condition. Unique, ethnographic documentation. - Included: two books, see above.

Insgesamt gut. With title in red and black and woodcut printer's mark. Marbled hardcover in the style of the time (somewhat rubbed). - Rare German translation of Nicolas Baptist Monardes' contribution on iron, published by Carolus Clusius in his Opus Exoticorum and translated here with additions by Jeremias Gesner (1590-1616), physician in Breslau. Monarde's famous book contains information on the processing of iron (also in Latin America) and was not limited to its pharmacological use. He pointed out the superiority of iron over the precious metals gold and silver brought from the Spanish colonies, which were highly valued, and made it clear that the real qualities of the metal should be measured by its capacity, both for health and in the form of instruments, utensils and ornaments. With alchemical logic, Monardes described the composition of iron and its many uses for therapeutic miracles or for making instruments used in surgery and by hairdressers. - The Spanish physician, naturalist and metallurgist Nicolas Monardes (c. 1508-1588) was one of the Europeans who never travelled abroad, but waited for biological discoveries to be brought to their homeland. In Seville, the harbour where the ships returning from the Spanish colonies had to anchor, he was perfectly located to welcome the fleets laden with treasures. - Endpapers renewed. Paper browned and partly minimally spotted. Last leaf with small professional restoration. Overall good.
