Silver monstrance. S.XX. Model monstrance of the Sun, with foot, shaft and display. In the display stand, the rays alternate between straight and sinuous ones, the longest of the straight ones ending in stars. The frame of rays is only interrupted vertically, and in this example we see a Greek cross with an amethyst as a finial on this axis. This finial was added as an offering from a devotee. The shaft with a knot or central apple, with geometric-style decorations. The stepped base has decorative mouldings. The type of sun monstrance replaces the old portable temple monstrance at the beginning of the 17th century. Both models coexisted from the end of the 16th century, when the sun monstrance was born, and finally the small temple monstrance disappeared around 1630. The sun monstrance soon spread throughout the Christian world and is still the most widely used today. Like the temple monstrance, the sun monstrance is based on a base and a shaft structure, but the upper Gothic temple is replaced by a frame of rays framing the monstrance box. This frame originally combined straight, often bevelled rays with other sinuous, flaming ones. Over time, in the 18th century, the model evolved towards more ornamental and original shapes.Weight: 5.264 kg.Measurements: 94 x 55 x 40 cm.

Vase; Manises, 19th century.Ceramic.Measurements: 50 x 28 x 28 cm; With base: 112 x 40 x 40 cm.Ceramic vase with different ornamental motifs, dominated by the presence of Arabic motifs in silver and blue. The piece has the classic colours used by the Manises factory, such as cobalt blue. This colour scheme, introduced by Islamic potters in medieval Spain together with the metallic lustre and the green and manganese style, appeared in Paterna at the end of the Middle Ages, and would be the most characteristic throughout Europe until the first half of the 18th century, when the secret of porcelain was discovered. The blue and white decoration was an attempt to imitate Chinese porcelain, which the Arabs were familiar with and used to make. Paterna was, along with Manises, the great centre of Islamic-influenced Hispanic ceramics, so it is not unusual for this new style to have its beginnings here. The blue glaze used by the Chinese is cobalt, a high-temperature glaze, which is why it is always applied under the glaze. In Islamic and Hispano-Muslim ceramics it will be called 'alsafra', a word derived from the Arabic word for cobalt. In the last quarter of the 14th century it began to be used in Paterna, and gradually replaced the green and manganese decorated series in these potteries. From this time onwards, the source of inspiration was no longer Muslim ceramics, but Chinese porcelain, with three firings: one for the paste, another for the white slip and finally the third for the enamel, the colours and the glaze. The decoration, on the other hand, becomes more abstract, and in the case of pieces with figurative decoration, this will only have half-length figures, with less defined backgrounds and a lesser spatial sense. They will be objects decorated with very linear lines.

Lot 74

Pyx or hostiary in gilded silver. With profuse plant-inspired decoration. Circular fluted base decorated with vine leaves and vine shoots. Stem with a knot or apple, and a cup with a lid ending in a cross. Contrasts and numbering. The pyx or host is the vessel used to hold the Sacred Form. It is a typological novelty that emerged at the end of the Romanesque period in Limoges, a producer of enamelled silverware. It has its origins in the Greek pyx, a small lidded box that was often used to store jewellery or beauty products. The first hostiariums took the form of a cylindrical box with a conical lid, hinged or linked by a chain. Even in these early examples from Limoges, it was common for them to have a cross-shaped top, although this has rarely been preserved. During the Gothic period, the same structure was maintained, although it could appear with or without a clasp and hinge. Likewise, in the Gothic period, the size of the host was reduced, which indicates a change in its function. It is no longer used during mass, as this function is covered by the ciborium, but is used to give communion to the sick in their homes. The finishing cross, now essential for all Eucharistic pieces, remains.Weight: 1170 g.Measurements: 35 x 20 cm.
