Important Account of HMS Thunder's Action Against the Danes in June 1808, HMS Thunder launched in 1800 and previously a slave ship was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1803 and saw considerable action. On the 9th June 1808 she drove off a considerable force of Danish-Norwegian ships and prevented a convoy from being successfully attacked. The letter written by the Captain James Caulfield describes this successful action in detail, 3pp., Included is the reply to the letter from the Admiralty praising the action.(1 page) The merchants at Lloyds involved in the Baltic trade, as a token of appreciation for this action in saving the convoy, gave Commander Caulfield £100 (c.8k in todays money) with which to purchase a piece of silver plate. Note both letters are noted as " a copy" but are clearly contemporary (2)
