Gilbert Marks; A late Victorian silver Dish, hallmarked for Gilbert Marks, London, 1898, also bearing his facsimile signature dated 1898, the dish of a shaped lozenge form, hand planished and embossed with scrolling chrysanthemum leaves and flowers, plain oval planished centre, 6¾in (17cm) long, approx weight 5.5ozt. Gilbert Leigh Marks (1861 - 1905) is generally considered one of the foremost silversmiths of his generation. Having learnt his trade with London firm Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst - with whom he continued his association in later years when they played host to his exhibitions, he registered his own mark at Goldmsiths' Hall in 1896. His work is notable for his studies of nature and his early work in particular for his depictions of flowers. Due to his untimely death following illness in 1905, it is generally accepted that Marks produced in the region of 700-800 pieces only during his career.
